Toto2Kansas Posted September 27, 2010 #51 Share Posted September 27, 2010 Toto-I used to work in a retirement village, and I guess that I am more tolerant of the elderly than other people. Most of them are just trying to get along as best they can with the disabilities that sometimes come with age. The ones that were rude & cranky were no doubt rude & cranky when they were young, at least that is what their sons & daughters would tell me! My idea of a horrible cruise is like the Carnival cruise "Amber Teka" mentions above! I think I would have jumped overboard! I worked in nursing homes for many years (in charge of the dietary departments) way back when, and am always very tolerant of the elderly, honestly. But on a ship that felt like a floating nursing home during a full moon (you may know what I am referring to if you work with the elderly), tolerance was running very thin for us on that sailing after the first week. ;) I could give you many instances that took place, but I will refrain from doing so. It just wasn't one of our best cruises, and we don't plan to repeat that type of sailing anytime soon. We sail on many longer cruises, and anyone who has ever sailed the exotic or longer voyages will know what I mean by saying the age onboard is usually on the older side. But this particular cruise was nothing like we had ever experienced before. And if anyone thinks we are a young couple, my DH is pushing 70 (quite a bit older than myself) and it even drove him to growling. lol

If he was sitting next to someone that resembled the picture below, and wearing these same clothes (taken with the captain at that luncheon, but cropped for my facebook picture). lol Then you have the right guy! Umbarger Posted September 28, 2010 #61 Share Posted September 28, 2010 After many strokes my mom has to use a scooter and hasn't hit an able bodied person yet. However, lots of able bodied people have hit my mom. They try to run in front of her, or weave around her, or sometimes people aren't looking where they are going and just walk right into her. Remember scooters don't have brakes and can not stop on a dime. You should see the able bodied people who practically crawl over my mom to get in the elevator before she does. My mom however has been driving the same scooter for 5 years. She knows how to drive that thing. I tried to drive it once. Never again. I hit walls, corners, doors, door ways, no people thankfully. I had to give my mom alot of credit. I think sometimes those horrible scooter drivers are the ones that rent one on a cruise and have never driven one before. Talk about dangerous. I think unexperienced scooter drivers should have to take a scooter driving course.

I agree, renting them and only using them on a cruise for those that do not know how to operate them can be very dangerous not only to the one driving, but to everyone else around them. :( I think this happens quite a bit onboard ships, at least by watching how they are driven gives you a clue that you had better get out of the way or else suffer what comes next. ;)

Toto2Kansas Posted September 28, 2010 #64 Share Posted September 28, 2010 Wow, Thanks for your comments, We are 49 and 51. I think we may wait for Princess .... Trust me, not all Princess sailings are like that. But that particular one was. Much depends on the time of year and length of cruise you take what the age mix will be, and that isn't just on Princess, but most cruise lines. ;) Enjoy! mytime53 Posted September 28, 2010 #65 Share Posted September 28, 2010 Wow, Thanks for your comments, We are 49 and 51. I think we may wait for Princess .... DH and I have booked our 5th Princess cruise for this coming January. Of the main cruise lines, we've sailed Carnival, RCL, and RC, also. We're 57 now. If we found the Princess cruises to be like what is inferred here, we wouldn't be on Princess. We've never found it difficult to find people our age or younger, or people older who were just as (or more) active than us.

We have sailed 26 times with Princess, and only run into this problem once. So, with only one cruise like this out of that many sailed with Princess, I totally agree with you. ;)
mytime53 Posted September 28, 2010 #67 Share Posted September 28, 2010 And I forgot to add that our cruises are 14+ days, and during off-peak times--the cruises that have an older demographic.
georoc01 Posted September 28, 2010 #68 Share Posted September 28, 2010 I agree, the lack of kids was wonderful. But you have to look at the entire picture here. I think I still have scars on my chins from being run into by scooters, walkers and wheelchairs. The one difference we have found when sailing on a ship full of seniors (and I am talking about very very senior ;)) is that they all expect you to move out of their way as they are coming through, get out of the elevator to make room for them as they are hungry, their blood sugar was low and they needed food right now, or it was their nap time and they were wanting to get back to their stateroom quickly. There were times I probably would have welcomed some kids onboard, even unsupervised ones. lol Shows-You needed to be there at least 45 minutes prior as the seats in the theater were gone about that time. Yes, they were napping in the seats until the show started. No joke. Getting off in port took forever, I think you can figure out why there. Forget the buffet, you couldn't walk through the line (it's where I got a lot of those scars from being run into). BUT, one great thing. The casino was never crowded. lol The plusses on this type of cruise is that if you shift your schedule to a later schedule, eating dinner say at 8pm and going to the later shows, they are empty. We go to tea at 4pm, so waiting to eat till 8 works out well and the boat is pretty dead after 9pm. Port times make those adjustments tough. If you are on princess excursions, they get priorty if its a tender port. If we aren't doing an excursion, eat a later breakfast and wait to get off the boat. Outside of Sanctuary or staying in my room, I haven't figured a way around the issues on a kiddie cruise. Give me the geriatric set any day. HAL253 Posted October 4, 2010 #69 Share Posted October 4, 2010 I have cruised 11 times with Costa and Carnival, which we loved. What is the average age of Princess cruises guests?. We are thinking about the 14 day cruise in Jan. We love Costa w/ the wine package. Not sure we will fit? Any thoughts? Hi, we have cruised about 25 times,14 on Princess. We were on Costa a long time ago.liked it.Carnival not as much. Royal Carb good. Of all the lines, we like Princess best. Not to many kids, (except Holiday Cruises). Most of the Princess Cruise we have taken had a nice mix. Some young couples 30ishto middle age 50/60. The Casino and clubs were great, and the ship was always alive. You will get some older people, but they are very active. The age was a little older on our Europe cruise, but always livley.
