Does Costa have an automatic tipping charge to your onboard account? If so, what is it?

Yes, automatic gratuities are charged to your account. We sailed on the Atlantica in the Caribbean in April (LOVED her!) and all onboard credit and purchases were in American dollars. I believe it equaled out to something like $11 dollars per day per person (children were less) However, we tipped our room steward extra on a daily basis because he was FANTASTIC! We also had a favorite waitress in our favorite bar (Via Veneto - we loved the tall red chairs by the large windows) that would always go out of her way for us. Therefore, we tipped her individually as well. Also, there is an automatic 15% gratuity added everytime you order an alcoholic beverage.

please do check the costa website. the amounts charged are different depending on where you are sailing. asia is less than europe and the caribbean is different from europe and asia. confusing, i know.

Also the longer the cruise the less daily service charge, and it will have to be paid either in € ir US $, depending on the area you are cruising.

We had children with us and they were charged tips daily - just like the adults - but the amount was less.

Not strictly true, the following is from Costa UK site:

 

There is no service charge for children under the age of 14, whereas guests between the ages of 14 and 17 will be charged 50% of the above rates.
