Dani2 Posted February 20, 2005 #1 Share Posted February 20, 2005 We have a set of Motorola Talk-About radios with (supposedly) 2 mile range. They work quite well, but they are about 4 years old. I'm wondering if I need to get a new set for the cruise. I'm mainly concerned about issues using them on the ship. (Pride of Aloha) When we are off the ship I think we will always be within a mile of each other and I'm sure they will work fine. I just wonder if all the obstructions in a ship will block our calls. If you have purchased newer models and they work well, please list your model number. (I prefer to stick with Motorola.) Thank you! Dani
Bequia Posted February 20, 2005 #2 Share Posted February 20, 2005 The ones you have shouldn't be a problem. If you upgrade, get the ones with extra private channels so you won't have to listen to everyone else on the same channel.;)
jcruise67 Posted February 21, 2005 #3 Share Posted February 21, 2005 I just purchased a set of Motorolla Talkabout T6500R Two-Way radios w/ FRS and GMRS range of 5 miles. It costs me an extra $75.00 for the FCC Permit to exceed the 2 mile range. Two-Way Radios are a necessity on and off the ship. DW and I use ours when she needs to page me from the cabin when I'm in the casino before dinner. I always frequent the casino when she gets ready for dinner. I get ready first and head for the casino. When she is ready, she pages me on the two-way radio and I head back to the cabin and get her. They are great to have when traveling in groups. this way everyone can check in from time to time. Make sure you have your radio set and locked to a channel that other families that are using the same model don't chime in on your conversations. This is not uncommon. Its happened to us, but we just switch channels. John
travelwithkids Posted February 21, 2005 #4 Share Posted February 21, 2005 I had several occasions when the radios did not work. The generally worked on the upper two decks.
jcruise67 Posted February 21, 2005 #5 Share Posted February 21, 2005 Thats weird. I've brought them on every cruise and never had a problem with reception. DW and I feel they are quite the cruise necessity. John
jcarol22 Posted March 1, 2005 #6 Share Posted March 1, 2005 I have also had reception problems with my 2-way radio on cruises (BellSouth 2210). I am thinking about buying new ones with a longer range for my next cruise, so l am glad to see this thread. Let me know if anyone has any buying tips. jcarol
CRUISEN4ALIVIN Posted March 1, 2005 #7 Share Posted March 1, 2005 i dont have 2way's and never been on a crusise. do you thinik i need to buy some? are they handy? thx
serene56 Posted March 1, 2005 #8 Share Posted March 1, 2005 They are handy if you are traveling with lots of people/kids. We used them for our first cruise and never again. Sitting in a show listening to the kids behind us play tag with them through out the show kind of did the walkie talkies in for us. If you are traveling with your significant other and each one is doing something different--meet up later in the day- Walkie talkies are not necessary for a cruise
cruzincurt Posted March 1, 2005 #9 Share Posted March 1, 2005 If you need a FCC permit in the US to have more powerful transmitters, why would it be OK to use them in a foreign country? Just curious.
LARGIN Posted March 2, 2005 #10 Share Posted March 2, 2005 Leave them home.. Most of the time they are distracting to other passengers

Just to ask, is the $75 FCC permit forever, or does it have to be renewed every year? Also, either the FRS or the GMRS version, if you bring it to Europe or Asia, and use it as a tourist (for a week, for example), will it be legal? Thank you.
