Eclipse / Solstice Internet Opinion

I need opinions regarding Internet access / speed from those who have sailed either ship recently. I am planning to bring my laptop on my November 20 Eclipse cruise. It is equipped with a Slingbox TV viewer which, given adequate Internet speed, will allow me to watch my Auburn Tigers play Alabama on November 26.

Can anyone tell me about their experience with the Internet speeds and access on the ship? Was wireless adequate, or do I need to focus on a hard wire in the Internet cafe?

Thanks in advance and War Eagle!

I just used the compuers on board and they were excuciatingly slow. Also, I belive it would relatively expensive to watch an entire football game.

Thanks for the insight. It will cost $76 dollars to watch the game, which I can afford. I'm more concerned about the speed of service. Your experience concerns me.

Why pay that much to watch your team lose?

Sorry, not a Bama fan, but we're still mad up here at Pat "Tie" Dye for settling for that field goal against SU years ago.:p

One day you will need to get over it! Maybe its that "bitterness" that has kept Syracuse down for so many years. You should be an Auburn fan given your location!

A lot depends on where you plan to cruise, but the connection can often be impossibly slow. I suspect any picture you get will be severely broken up. And the wifi in my cabin on the Equinox was very poor.

On a Med cruise and a TA the connection was so slow they occasionally just shut down the Internet service. Bottom line, you may not be able to watch the game for any price.

Just of Eclipse, had problems with wireless signal, so used their apple laptops, speed was terribly slow, think very slow dial up! I just used them just to check my emails and bank account.

I wonder if service improves in the Caribbean? Lets hope so!

As previous cruisers have stated the speed is painfully slow even just doing basic web browsing. I doubt you'd be able to get a working picture and sound.

Additionally I've been told (no personal experience here) that they generally block streaming broadcasts (hulu, espn3, netflix instant) due to the bandwidth consumption. Not sure that they'd block the connection to your own slingbox but if it's running on a default slingbox port I'm betting they have it blocked.

When we sailed on the Solstice the only place I could find sports was in the casino bar so you may want to look at that as an option.

p.s. - I ended up being glad I missed watching the VT game on our cruise b/c it was the week we lost to JMU.
