T at 40 Posted November 1, 2010 #1 Share Posted November 1, 2010 Hello everyone, this is my first time cruising the Carribean, can anyone tell me if we need innoculations please. Thanx Tina
Rum Rat Posted November 1, 2010 #2 Share Posted November 1, 2010 I believe you might need some on certain Islands. Talk to you Travel Agent they will know. Of all the cruises I have done, I have not had any jabs at all. Mike .
jodanuke Posted November 1, 2010 #3 Share Posted November 1, 2010 The best bet is to speak to the nurse at you GP practise as they will have a full up to date list. But apart from tetanus which you probaby already have, I don't think you need anything else.
cruiseluvva Posted November 1, 2010 #4 Share Posted November 1, 2010 It is always a good idea to be covered for Hep A if travelling anywhere where standrds of hygiene are less than we are used to - unless of course, you don't intend eating or drinking anything ashore. However, this a good idea, not mandatory.
capasamari Posted November 1, 2010 #5 Share Posted November 1, 2010 We have also had typhoid. You really are best advised to ask your practice nurse; tell them which islands you are visiting, they will have the up-to-date advice from the Department of Health and can carry out any vaccinations required. Ours doesn't even charge for the prescription to replace their stocks. If you are a blood donor you may be refused for several months after your return from some islands (Jamaica was one for Paul). ROSEBASKETS Posted November 1, 2010 #6 Share Posted November 1, 2010 Going this weekend and had to have tetanus booster, which now only comes with Polio and something else that now lasts a lifetime, but apart from that no others were needed. Made my arm ache for about 3 days though, probably just a bit soft! You need to have it a minimum of 5 weeks before you travel. It was free from our GP surgery, just made an appt. with the practice nurse. Welcome to the forum, just a suggestion, think about changing your user name before you start to get unwanted emails. :)

BrianI Posted November 2, 2010 #8 Share Posted November 2, 2010 There are no mandatory innoculations required but those like tetanus, hepatitis, typhoid etc may be recommended or need a booster. Best see you GP practice nurse and they will give you their recommendations based on where you are going and your medical history. Brian

Denarius Posted November 2, 2010 #11 Share Posted November 2, 2010 There is a (UK) NHS website http://www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk which gives health advice for overseas travel, including vaccinations. For the Caribbean, the latter are usually diphtheria, tetanus and polio (given in one combined vaccination), hepatitas A and typhoid.
cruisebore Posted November 2, 2010 #12 Share Posted November 2, 2010 Dengue fever is a problem in the Caribbean at the moment. It is spread my the mossies DURING THE DAY. It will be a wise precaution to use Jungle Formulae repellent http://www.jungleformula.co.uk/diseases/dengue.htm Cb

BrianI Posted November 3, 2010 #14 Share Posted November 3, 2010 Please can anyone tell me what it says about innoculations in the brochure for Azura Christmas cruise. I went green.... stupidly...which means no brochure and no info on vaccinations in green version. They only tend to list the mandatory ones so would not be much use anyway. Go and see the professionals, the pactice nurse with your GP, give them your itinery, and they will advise. The holiday information books are not sent out until six weeks before departure, so if you phone P&O to revoke your GO GREEN, they will send you one. Have your P&O booking ref to quote. The book also contains the proper personalised luggage labels that dont rip, so worth having. Brian
