Stavanger, Norway

We are going to Norway in July and our first port is a 10 hour stop in Stavanger. We plan on doing a (3 and 1/2 hour) boat trip to Lysefjord and then on our own see the Cathedral, and wooden houses in Old Stavanger. If there is time to also see the Petroleum Museum. We will be tendered and would like to know if these attractions are within walking distance of each other and would we have enough time to see them? Are there other attactions that we should see instead or in addition to? THANKS

With a 10-hour port day, you absolutely have enough time to add the Petroleum Museum as well. We explored some of the old town area, visited the cathedral, spent 1½-2 hours at the petroleum museum (we work in the industry, so we took our time), and visited the Valberg Tower. At a leisurely pace, all of that took us from about 9 am to 3:30 pm, when we headed to a pub along the historic waterfront to have a beer and meet up with a local friend until it was time to head back to the ship.

Cruise ships dock right downtown, so it's very easy to get around on foot. The cathedral, museum, etc. are all within about a 350-m radius of the cruise berths, so depending on which side you dock on (the central pier can fit two ships side-by-side as was the case during our port call), nothing is more than a half kilometer walk away.

What other ports will you visit in Norway? Bergen??? Happy to share more info on other locations. We didn't stop in Stavanger.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Thanks Kaisatsu. We plan to do our boat trip to Lysefjord through the ship excursion desk. Would we be better to do it on our own after we reached the port? Are tour boats readily available at the harbour?

I don't know. We were considering doing it on our own, and it sounded pretty simple and straightforward, but we ended up scrapping it to hang out with our friend.

The primary Lysefjord cruise company is Rødne: http://rodne.no You can find the schedule and prices on their website along with a map of their departure point, which is right by the cruise pier. If you decide to do it on your own, you might want to pre-book online to guarantee space, just in case they're the same operator the ship uses! (We've been burned by that at ports in other parts of the world!)
