W. Ocean Boulevard to Be Resurfaced Near LA River

Partial road closures on weekends, Dec. 10-12 & Dec. 17-19

December 3, 2010

Motorists who use West Ocean Boulevard to travel between downtown Long Beach and San Pedro or Terminal Island will be directed to alternate routes as crews work to resurface the roads on two consecutive weekends this month. Expect traffic delays.

The resurfacing project will happen just west of the World Trade Center and on the Ocean Boulevard Bridge over the Los Angeles River.

Eastbound lanes will be closed beginning at 8 p.m. on Friday, December 10, through 8 p.m. Sunday, December 12. Traffic from San Pedro and Terminal Island into downtown Long Beach will be rerouted south through the harbor area.

Westbound lanes will be closed beginning at 8 p.m. on Friday, December 17, through 8 p.m. Sunday, December 19. Traffic from downtown Long Beach to San Pedro and Terminal Island will be rerouted north along Shoreline Drive.

There will be detour signs and traffic controls for the alternate routes.

This will mostly affect those cruisers either staying in Long Beach and cruising out of San Pedro or those staying in San Pedro and cruising out of Long Beach...

Instead of traversing the harbor the "short way", you may have to "go around"...From Long Beach North on the 710 to either Pacific Coast Highway (surface streets) or all the way up to the 405 (the "all freeway route") to the 110 South, off at Harbor Blvd.

Instead of 7 miles, you are looking at 12 or 19...and figure as much as a half an hour driving time...

They will most likely reroute you onto Pacific Coast Highway. Not exactly the most scenic or efficient route. I would stick with the 710, 405, 110 combination to get in between San Pedro and Long Beach. They are working on the Vincent Thomas Bridge right now and have that shut down nightly from 8p-6a and that is the detour they are using. I am using the freeway combo and it works just fine.
