Primetime Live! OH YUCK!

One poster mentioned asking for a clean bedspread. How do you know you got a clean bedspread? Or another one from a closet, that hasn't been washed either? Or one from the room next door?

And folks that wipe down the room when they arrive...do you wipe the room down after each visit by the room steward? If you don't (and you probably don't...) what good was the first wipe-down?

And finally, regarding the Primetime Live show last night...do you think what they found would be any different that what they'd find if they checked your bedroom at home? I bet it wouldn't be...

Paul, I feel almost certain that there is no semen or urine on my bedroom walls or ceilings.

The reason they don't wash/dryclean bedspreads is to prolong their life. Think about washing your bedspread at home on a weekly basis and the poor limp thing would be worn out within a matter of months. I too, take off the bedspreads because (thankfully) I can sleep comfortably under no more than the sheet. We always ask for a clean blanket for all the beds.

Well, we do actually wipe the room down more than once. As for whether or not the steward actually delivers a freshly laundered bedspread, we know we have to place some trust somewhere. The linens do have that fresh laundered feel and smell. It's the same as trusting that no one spit in your food before serving you.

My house is very clean, immaculately so. These things we do to sanitize public places are pretty much a way of life for us. I also know it seems excessive to many people.

DH & I travel alot - cruises, land vacations, exotic places like Africa, etc. and one thing I can say without qualification is WASH YOUR HANDS! We recently spent a few days in New Orleans & I came home with a cold. I later realized that I had touched many surfaces without washing my hands enough - like pulling out chairs in restaurants, opening doors, etc. I think alcohol wipes for phones and remotes are good, but the most important thing is to keep your hands clean.

Okay, so if our own homes were subject to the same procedures, how would we do?

The new media lost all integrity when Dateline NBC used model rocket motors to ignite spilled fuel from GMC gas tanks during crash tests - when you can't report news, make it up.

There comes a time when you just have to keep these types of things out of your mind and not let it ruin your trip - let your immune system do the work. Of course, do some common sense things like wash your hands, take the bedspread off (it's rough and hard anyway, no point to it), and use slippers when walking around. But other than that, just don't worry, be happy.

Well, I can tell you one thing, they wouldn't find urine on my walls. ;)

I guess we kind of agree with MoreCruises because we don't really go to the extreme.........we depend on our immune system to do it's job. I do bring lysol wipes with us and give the room a quick wipe. I ask the room stewart to double sheet the bed this way we do not come in direct contact with the blanket (on sheet under and one over) and we request that he/she not put the spread on the bed for the rest of the cruise. I bring my own pillow but thats for comfort not because of germs. And we wash our hands frequently. Just back from a HAL cruise and they had these hand sanitizer machines all over the ship. I liked that. To be honest, I am more cautious what we do in port.......no eating or drinking anything that is not in a can or bottle and never any ice. I learned the hard way the damage ice can cause years ago on a trip to Jamaica.

You can't possibly clean all your surroundings. You fly in airplane, rent cars, take busses, open doors to shops, and filth of all filth ---- carry cash. Any of you ever go into the casino and touch the same slot machines and playing cards as all those people who don't wash after using the restroom?

I'll bet if they did an expose on cruise ship or restaurant kitchens, most of you would never eat out again.

Sometimes you just have to forget about that over which you have little control. And remember to wash your hands ;)

I agree. Washing your hands is the best form of defense.

I wish they'd leave the doors to the public washrooms open though. I go to all the trouble of washing my hands and all it takes is one unwashed hand to dirty the door handle.

Hand sanitizer is my purse at all times while on the cruise ship for this reason. I don't care what I look like in the dining room;)

What I everywhere upon leaving a restroom: Keep the paper towel I used to dry my hands to open the door handle on the way out, then just drop it in the next waste container. If there are air dryers and no towels, then push the door open if possible, or grab the very top or bottom of the door handle (the part people usually don't grab) to open it. Basically, do what ever you have to not to touch that door handle...Haven't had a flu or cold for 1.5 years!

Have you ever watched the cooking shows on the Food Network? Chefs use the same spoon to taste and stir, rub raw meat with their hands and then dip into the salt container w/o washing first, dunk a finger into a sauce to taste... it's a wonder we don't keel over dead every time we eat in a restaurant :D . And these are the top chefs of expensive restaurants the world over, so it's not a matter of price. (Or maybe it is -- perhaps at McD's they have higher hygiene standards  )

In spite of that, I adore restaurants -- the best part of vacation is eating out 3 times a day! And even at home I eat out several times per week. To my recollection, I've only gotten a GI virus once, from a salad (plated, not salad bar), in a local restaurant about 20 years ago.

> Blacklight (UV) picks up anything that phosphoresces, including detergents and cleaning solutions. They also pic up things like wear on door handles and wooden surfaces as well as any repairs that might have been carried out in the area. Too mnay people watching CSI???

> Many plastic surfaces and wall coverings show as speckled in blacklight.

> ABS Television is owned by Disney. Did not see Disney Cruise Line mentioned in the report !!!!

> Cornell University, the most leading hotel school in the country, reccommends that hotels deep clean hotel rooms once per year !!! Far less than I have seen on cruise ships.

> I hear that tv journalists went onboard to find somehting about the NLV outbreaks on ships but found nothing, so instead they had to find something or come away empty handed. I wonder what they had to do to get their story???

Thank you!!

My feeling about the media ranks right up there with lawyers.

Also, I read somewhere that people who live in ultra-sanitized environments tend to catch something when they venture outdoors quicker than someone who doesn't go overboard with cleaning.

Don't get me wrong, I like things clean and neat, but if every square inch of my cabin isn't steam-cleaned before I get in there, I'm not worried.
