It will be great not having to reserve a space when one is already reserved. I cannot for the life of me imagine going to formal night, so for everyone a cruise is different!

Quite right!

I find it interesting that the only people who say they don't understand the cabanas are the people who have never done them.

I don't understand the fascination with bingo or throwing away money at a casino.... but others love it, and it is there for their enjoyment.

Some don't understand spending a few thousand extra for a deluxe suite with some perks. Others feel the perks are worth it.

We all have different ideas of what we choose to spend money on, while on a cruise.... I would never dream of telling people their choice is senseless because it is not my choice. Yet people here do it all the time.

We used our cabana as a "home base" during the day, and it was worth every penny. We went to all the trivia, took the cooking classes, got up and down, but at all times knew we had our lovely spot waiting for us, along with the decadently attentive Romeo and Jayson, who coddled us like a couple of eggs for the week.

The pampering is what made this a special vacation for us.... for others, it is something quite different. enjoy your cabana!!

Yes...Very well said. I love having a cabana. I never thought I was being selfish by having one. Everyone enjoy different things.

Cannot say it any better and cannot wait for our cabana!

We understand it just fine. We are just too active to want to sit in the same chair all day. We don't rent cabanas because we don't want to.

What you don't appreciate is the privatization of the public decks diminishes the cruise for everyone else, and need is the direct result of cramming more passengers onto the Signature class ships. On the other hand, spending more money on a suite or a bingo game does not diminish public deck areas for everyone else.

The private chairs in front of the Lanai staterooms has caused a similar situation, along with the associated bad feelings among passengers. I will simply stick with the Vista class ships, which are my favorite anyhow.

Score:

A woman in our Roll Call said that two Retreats had opened up on our sailing. I was able to get one this afternoon! It is not as close to the pool for my daughter, but I am sure it will be quite lovely!

What do cabanas and retreats cost and what exactly is a retreat? This is my first HAL cruise. Celebrity doesn't charge for cabanas and I love those. :p

Take the private cabana situation a step further and there might be 500 reserved chairs taking up much of the available deck space, and that would only accommodate one fourth of the passengers on a larger HAL ship. Kind of like the privatized beaches of Europe. The whole cabana idea is just bad. Greedy on HAL's part and selfish for those who cannot share a common resource.

but if we take *your* thought a step further, perhaps we should open up more common space on the ship by getting rid of private cabins and just making a ton of bunk beds available that people can grab to sleep as they need. i mean heck, why selfishly waste all that space when some people are barely in their cabins all week? why allow someone to be even more elitist and pay for a suite, if it's only for maybe 2 people? :)

the cabanas do not take up as much space as people complain about... you lose maybe 10 deck chairs worth of space total. you're not losing as much of the "common resource" as you think. some people just like to be grumpy.

some people just like to be grumpy.

"Grumpy" is a more polite term than I would use, but it works... :D

The whole idea of an egalitarian society in which "common resources are to be shared" on cruise ships is pretty silly anyway.

Some people have suites, some people have verandahs, some are inside, some are outside.... each utilizes the space of the ship in a different way.

Anyone objected to the Pinnacle taking up "common space" lately? Yet people have to pay extra for it. It is not shared with everyone.

The Neptune Lounge takes up space, too. Yet only a handful of people can make use of it.

One could go on and on.....

I think some people just see sour grapes... but luckily those people choose to sail on different ships than I do... :D

You are very wrong! One of my favorite places to sit is along the side windows around the Lido pool area, especially when the Lido buffet is crowded. These nice sitting areas are now private cabanas on the Signature class ships. A bit more than "10 deck chairs".
