Hong Kong port for Diamond

I understand that the Diamond docks at a container port in Hong Kong. I was wondering what kind of transportation is available from that location. Does Princess have a schuttle, if so to where? I'm interested in going to Lantau island and would like to do it on my own. Any information would be appreciated.

Hi Pam

We were on the Diamond at Hong Kong in April last year.

On that trip there was a fleet of shuttle buses which dropped us off at a department store in Kowloon, which is about 10 mins walk from the Star Ferry Terminal. http://www.starferry.com.hk/. We did the trip to Lantau, for the second time, using public transport.

You can take the Star ferry to Hong Kong Island, then get another ferry to Lantau. From the ferry port on Lantau we took the bus to Tai O, a fishing village, well worth visiting. Then we took the bus to the Po Lin Monastery, where there is a hugh Golden Buddha. Ample and very enjoyable food is available for a small fee You can then cross the island by a differnt route, taking the bus or cable car, to Tung Chung from where you can take the rapid transport train (MTR) back to Kowloon, to pick up your shuttle bus.

Sounds complicated but it is really very easy to do. Please get back if you need any clarification.

Lantau is very easy to reach. From Kowloon take the Star Ferry to the other side where there's a bus station. You can get a bus which will take you to Lantau and drop you in another bus station which is next to the cable car to Lantau - fabulous views..

Sorry, can't remember the bus numbers but ask the question on trip advisor - they're very helpful.

Unless things have changed the Diamond doesn't dock at a container port in Hong Kong. Or at least it didn't two years ago when we were on it. It dropped anchor offshore and used tenders. We took the ship's excursion to Lantau Island - excellent value for money and not to be missed. The coach was waiting for us when we got off the tender and took us to the entrance to Lantau Island where you have to leave the coach and get on a small public bus as the roads on Lantau cannot cope with large coaches. We stopped at a local beach for a comfort stop and were then taken to a fishing village which supplies fish to many of the restaurants in Hong Kong. Very interesting indeed. The houses are built on stilts above the water and despite lacking basic amenities there was a plethora of television aerials fixed to the roofs! From there we went to the Po Lin Monastery where we visited the Giant Buddha which used to be the largest in the world until the Chinese ( yes - really) built a larger one about four years ago. You can climb up inside it and there is a museum at the top. We then had a delicious vegan lunch in the monastery. We had a wonderful, knowledgeable guide who spoke excellent English. All this was included in the excursion cost. We thought it was well worth the money and we were allowed plenty of time to 'do our own thing'. Very little herding.

Took a Princess shuttle from the container port to the Star Ferry port area -plenty of "tourism help" there - and grabbed the subway. . We then took the subway to Lantau. Fast, clean, and inexpensive. Then it's the cable car up to the top and did the tour on our own. Very easy to do - (at least it was in April 2009). We cruised Bejing to Bankok.

I might add that it was among the best cruises we have ever taken. Have a wonderful time!
