Thanks to all who responded to the original poste.er.

We are now booked on the Celebrity land tour but it is not spending much time in Denali which is my primary .land destination.

So far, it may well be a bit cheaper and certainly easier to go w/ Celebrity, but i do have specific things I wanat that they do not offer.

Their first day of a three day land tour consists of an overnight in Anchorage, nothing else.

Just bought the $100 tour saver book yesterday, once it arrives I will try planning again.

Thoughts on the greyline domed bus vs/ the train?

Decent Denali hotels in least tourisy areas? planning ont e the Tundra tour in the park. other suggestions? We will be there two nights.

Greatly appreciate feedbak. Even reviwing these boards is oveer-welming for a first timer.

Thanks!

I have only driven in Alaska (cars and RV), but based on the schedules it appears that the bus is a quicker ride than the train. The train tracks run parallel to the hwy so I don't think the scenery could be much different. Which has the better departure time for you? both leaving Anc and then leaving Denali.

If you don't have a car your lodging options are limited to places around glitter gulch that offer a shuttle or close enough to walk to.

I highly recommend a car rental. It will give you so much more flexibility for lodging and dining, plus some lovely stops along the way. Don't let the idea of driving in Alaska frighten you. It's quite simple; the hwys are only 2 lanes once you leave Anchorage so very straightforward. I'm one of those women drivers who gets lost everywhere, and I've made it every time!

Here's a web site for lodging around Denali. http://www.alaskaone.com/_dcc/accommodations/

And a couple of links for transportation and driving,
