17th street area car rental or public parking?

We are picking up a car at FLL the day before our cruise. Would like to return it near our hotel on 17th street but seems rental places are closed on sunday pm. Is there any public parking around? Hate to pay hotel valet parking only to return car the next am -- Should we just return it to the airport that night and take a cab to our hotel? thanks.

Why would you not want to return it to FLL and then take the shuttle to the port?
