Mardi Gras

Just saw that March 9th is the Mardi Gras celebration on the island. Is that worth doing or is it something that we should avoid?

Would it create traffic problems going to Rum Point?

Not sure how or if to factor this into our plans.

The biggest Mardi Gras celebration in Cayman is always held on Ash Wednesday. This year that will be March 9,2011. The biggest party is at the Kaibo Yacht Club, in the Cayman Kai area of North Side and about a mile from Rum Point.

Traffic and parking gets bad in the area, but particularly later on in the evening when the party heats up. There is only one road in and out of the area.

Police will be in full force in the area and roadblocks may be set up to stop and arrest those who choose to drive drunk when leaving the party. If you choose to go, please appoint a designated driver. Being in police custody is a lousy way to miss your last tender back to the ship.

Other events around the island that day tend to be much more reverential in the spirt of Ash Wednseday. It is a public holiday and most public and private sector workers have the day off to attend religious services and spend the day with family.
