Galveston Port closed?

On the local news they keep talking to different passengers. They are not happy, which I can understand not being able to go on your cruise. But don't they understand it's not Carnivals fault that it's foggy. And it's not Carnivals call whether they can leave or not, it's the pilot company. My husband works on the ship channel and this time a year is always a hit or miss.

Has everyone boarded the Ecstasy yet? I hope everyone gets to depart today!

I don't see the point they want be able to leave and get anywhere they have to be back in port by thursday morining for the next cruise, I think the ship will be in port till then.:(

OMG, I am so sorry for you folks who are still on the island and having to deal with all of this! What a nightmare - for everyone involved. It's no one's fault, but it sure is frustrating for you all!

This almost feels like a disaster situation, like when folks have to leave their homes and go to shelters due to a hurricane. But, this is only fog! Who would have ever thought fog could wreak so much havoc?!

I will definitely respect fog more in the future.

Yes we are still stuck in Galveston. I can see the Ecstasy down from us maybe 1/4 of a mile or so. It took us 2 1/2 hours to get on the ship yesterday. We were delayed leaving last night because a fueling barge bumped the ship and the Coast Guard had to inspect the damage before she would be cleared to sail. Cris came on the intercom last night around 11 and announced this. By the time the ship was cleared to sail, the fog rolled in again. This isn't fun anymore!

I feel so sorry for you guys. We have some friends on this cruise also and talked to them at 10pm last night. Like you it is not much fun anymore. I hope it clears and the rest of the cruise goes smooth.

No offense, but living through enough hurricanes and floods to choke a moose, I'd still rather be on the ship, eating fine food like there was no tomorrow, and having a blast. I really don't care if it is docked or sailing, I just like being spoiled!!! Since there is not any ship problems, like fire, or other things that cripple the ship, they are still being served like usual. I wouldn't mind being there, because I would be willing to bet they are going to get some money back through a future credit! I could handle that! The only thing they are really missing now is the casino, since it has to be out of port, and maybe some of the stores. I think I could manage and still have a wonderful time!

No offense taken. I work in the disaster recovery field, so I well know the horrors of living through a disaster. However, please note that I didn't say this is like living through a disaster. I said it almost feels like a disaster situation when folks have to leave their homes to go to a shelter. I was merely referring to the convention center situation.

LOL, so you are like me and have had to sleep in trailers with boat motors, getting sick from the gas fumes??? I had to spend time in NO after Katrina. One of our assignments was to guard prisoners that were stuck on an overpass! Slept on concrete during our breaks!

Aren't disasters fun???:D

Guys let's at least cut the Ecstasy passengers some slack. They expected to be onboard their ship Saturday afternoon and didn't make it onboard until sometime in the middle of this past night. I would say that could qualify as not being the same thing as having fun on the ship.

I totally agree. I would be very unhappy. There is 'talk' that Ecstasy may not even leave to go to Progreso now at all. How very frustrating. :(

I agree also. I really feel for them. We were on the Ecstasy last July when the port was closed due to TS Alex. We sat off Galveston for a couple of hours before they turned us around and took us back to the gulf where they could open the casino and shops. We live in the area so we didn't have to change flights or anything. It was just another sea day for us and one more nice dinner in the dining room. We enjoyed the extra day. But I felt sorry for people on board who really needed to get home for whatever reason, and I felt REALLY sorry for those people waiting to board whose vacations were delayed by a day.

Exactly. We gave up the ghost at 7 pm Saturday night and left the island. That seems like eons ago, compared to the folks who stayed, and were still waiting to board at midnight last night.

At this point, it's not even the loss of the days of the cruise that's such a pain for those still waiting. It's the not knowing, the wondering what to do with the car and the luggage, the wondering where will I and my family sleep tonight, the wondering whether to give up and go home, etc. It's being shuttled to a convention center or a port, to wait and wait and wait.

When you expect to be on a ship by noon Saturday morning to start a much anticipated vacation, and are still not on that ship at midnight Sunday night - that's 36 hours of misery. It's easy for the folks who are not passengers on this ill fated cruise to say they would rather be in our shoes, but they might feel differently were they living it.

If I was suppose to be on the Ecstasy, pretty sure by now I would take the refund & head home... really wonder how many will still go?

Feel sorry for everyone involved!

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing. There might be a very light load on that ship!

GreenZoolie and gman0119 you both mentioned working in the diaster recovery field - THANK YOU! I also live in hurricane country but live about 30 miles north of I-10 so it is very seldom that I have to leave my house, even when the hurricane is a Cat-5. But having to live with no electricity, water or sewer for a week or more at a time I have to say we appreciate all of you who come to our aid in times like this. Once again - THANK YOU
