Any suggestions for touring Rhodes. Can it be done on your own? How is the local transportation? Are taxis readily available and do the drivers provide information? Any suggestions for private tours ?

I could use some help in planning our day and 1/2 there.

Thanks for any advice or information!

There a year ago. We walked off the ship and into Rhodes on our own. Knew in advance (online research) what we wanted to see. Very enjoyable day and all on foot.

In Google Maps, enter "Achladef, Rhodes, Greece." This street is the entrance to Rhodes Old Town from the Port area, and also where you will find cabs right inside the city gate. Go up and little to the right and you'll see a curving street called Akti Sachtouri which goes past the base of a long pier - this is where your ship will dock.

Aristotelous, which runs parallel to the city walls, is the main street of the Old Town, very touristy, with many places to eat. Take any smaller street or alley away from the walls, and you will be in a very charming area of older houses (this is essentially the old Jewish Quarter of Rhodes). Continue to the north, and you will reach the New Town, modern Rhodes. This is also where you'll find the 14th century castle of the Knights of Rhodes, which you can tour. It is hard to miss it, it looms over the town.

We only had one day in Rhodes, and spent it walking around the old town; we never even got to the castle.

Rhodes does offer some different options. Exploring town (both old and new) is easy to do on your own and everything is within walking distance of the ship (unless you have mobility issues). Rhodes is also well known for its excellent beaches (this is a popular beach resort island for lots of Brits and Germans) and its possible to get to most of the popular beaches by using the local buses. If you want to really see the entire island or go to Lindos you might want to rent a car, hire a car/driver or take an excursion.

Rhodes is a sensational Greek island . The Alastair Maclean wartime film The Guns of Navarone was filmed here in the old town of Rhodes and also at the Acropolis of Lindos .

Lindos is a walking only town and the Cruise lines generally offer a ships excursion which is well worth taking .

Four of us had a great day in Rhodes by doing a private taxi tour with Themis Gounaris.

Themis grew up living in the Old City and he drove us through some of narrow streets (lanes) that most tourist wouldn't find. We also went to Lindos by going off the main road through the villages. He was most informative about the history of the entire area and was very entertaining. His email address is - themis@hol.gr.

You can also "google" Themis Gounaris for his website.

If you have a day and a half I'd definitely make a trip to Lindos, whether through a ship excursion or a private excursion. It's a nice town with no cars, the streets are pedestrian only. The small church near the beginning of the hike up through town to the acropolis is really pretty, sadly they don't allow pictures inside but it's well worth stopping in and seeing. The only reason to not visit Lindos is if you have problems walking as it is a bit of a hike up to the acropolis, the streets in town are moderately steep and once you get to the entrance of the acropolis there are quite a few steps to get up to the top. But once you get up there it is well worth it:

Back in Rhodes the castle is definitely worth a visit and the old town in general is nice to just walk around.
