Rare gnome12 Posted March 14, 2011 #1 Share Posted March 14, 2011 For Canadians travelling (or living) abroad you can register with Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. https://www.voyage2.gc.ca/Registration_inscription/Register_Inscrire/Login_ouvrir-une-session-eng.aspx?fwd=true&hash=p0V4sJhYtXNnDsAOImpW8w6161
Been There, Planning That Posted March 15, 2011 #2 Share Posted March 15, 2011 Nomi, we have done that for exotic independent travel but in light of world upsets -- whether political or environmental -- I think we'll even do this for our river cruise in Europe. Fortunately we've never had to call upon our government which doesn't have the best reputation for assisting its citizens in distress.
Rare gnome12 Posted March 15, 2011 Author #3 Share Posted March 15, 2011 I'm not sure how much I expect assistance, but it is helpful if someone (besides my sister) knows where I expect to be. I too have never registered (except when I spent a few years in Israel at university) but I think the world has changed. Sadly.
Been There, Planning That Posted March 15, 2011 #4 Share Posted March 15, 2011 Nomi, we spent over a month last winter in Egypt, Jordan and Israel with a land tour. And yes, we were registered even though we were with a tour company. But we haven't bothered for places like Australia or Europe in the past but I think we will from now on. Ozjohnno Posted March 15, 2011 #5 Share Posted March 15, 2011 A number of years ago our Government down here stated a website for Australian travellers .. http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/ We have registered in the past and will continue to do so. Our Government may not do much for us if we need them but at least they and our family will know our itinerary.
