Nomi, we have done that for exotic independent travel but in light of world upsets -- whether political or environmental -- I think we'll even do this for our river cruise in Europe. Fortunately we've never had to call upon our government which doesn't have the best reputation for assisting its citizens in distress.

I'm not sure how much I expect assistance, but it is helpful if someone (besides my sister) knows where I expect to be.

 

I too have never registered (except when I spent a few years in Israel at university) but I think the world has changed. Sadly.
