24butterfly Posted March 10, 2005 #1 Share Posted March 10, 2005 We're going on the Liberty in July, and would like to do Naples on our own. Carnival is a bit xpensive. Anyone do Naples from the Port, and can you offer suggestions? I know there's a street market there somewhere. Thanks.
wwinfl91 Posted March 10, 2005 #2 Share Posted March 10, 2005 We were in Naples in 2003 when the Golden docked there. We were there on a Sunday and most of the stores were closed. We used a private driver with 3 other couples and visited Pompeii and Herculaneum before returning to Naples to visit the Museum of Archeology. If you are interested in history most of the good finds from both Pompeii and Herculaneum plus a whole bunch of other Roman and Greek sites are displayed there. It would be too far to walk but you could probably find a cab that would take you there. There is also a fantastic overlook that has a great view of the Bay of Naples, the city and Vesuvius but again you would need a car or a cab to get there. From what we had read before we took the cruise and then were again warned again on the ship, Naples, especially the dock area can be a rough place for tourists because of pickpockets and gypsies. When we were driving back to the ship even on a Sunday we noticed a number of people hanging around the docks that I wouldn't want to have anything to do with. It also did not look like a very pedestrian friendly city, many in Italy are not, even though we were there on Sunday there was still quite a bit of traffic including lots of motorbikes zooming around. You might check and see if there is a rollcall for your cruise and see if you can find several other couples who might want to share a private tour in this port. Good luck and have a great next cruise.
24butterfly Posted March 15, 2005 Author #3 Share Posted March 15, 2005 We have done all those other things on previous trips. I am interested in the CITY of Naples and what to do; how to get around, etc.. Anybody done this? THanks!
cruisingmimi Posted March 16, 2005 #4 Share Posted March 16, 2005 I saw a tour advertised online that did a tour of Naples and took you to Mt. Vesuvius, then half-way up the mountain and you could walk to the top to view the crater. I can probably find the website I saw the tour advertised on if you are interested. You just booked it online. We are looking for Naples stuff also. We've been to Pompeii so don't want to go there again (although it was fantastic to see). wwinfl91 Posted March 16, 2005 #5 Share Posted March 16, 2005 One thing to do IN NAPLES is go to the Museum of Archeology. You said you had been to Pompeii but most of the best of the things that were found at both Pompeii and Herculaneum as well as many other finds from Southern Italy can be seen there. That includes many of the best of the mosaics and frescos as well as gold jewery and many everyday things. There are also halls with marble statues. It is in the downtown area of Pompeii and could easily take up a half day if you tried to see everything. We spent two hours there and felt we just touched the surface. Have a great next cruise. first-time-with-kids Posted March 17, 2005 #6 Share Posted March 17, 2005 Just got a 4 hous taxi for 4 at 140 euros - about £100 - to go to Pompeii. Price usually about 240 euros. Cheaper than the bus!
jingle Posted May 13, 2005 #7 Share Posted May 13, 2005 How did you get this taxi and from where? How long will it stay with you? Thanks.
