Hawaii697 Posted April 5, 2011 #1 Share Posted April 5, 2011 My husband started a new job yesterday. It's a great opportunity. However, I'm sitting here patiently waiting to hear, if he will be able to take our 6th Annual Group Cruise in July. :( Please send positive vibes our way. After the year he's had, he really needs this vacation. :o

craftykitty Posted April 5, 2011 #12 Share Posted April 5, 2011 My DH has just started a new job as well, we're booked on the Glory for June 5th with my mother and one of her friends in the next aft-balcony cabin next to us. Looks like it's going to be 3 women, a casino, a bar and a dining room for us. We said we'd send pictures regularly!
Hawaii697 Posted April 13, 2011 Author #13 Share Posted April 13, 2011 Thank you all for the good vibes . . . DH will be sailing. We actually have two back to back vacations. DD has a YBOA tourney in Orlando, the week of July 9th and DH is the coach. Since the first part of the tourney is pool play, they will allow him to take off two extra days to coach the girls for the playoffs. Then back home for a couple of days and then cruisin' :D. Good luck to those of you in the same "BOAT"
tef43 Posted April 13, 2011 #14 Share Posted April 13, 2011 Most employers will respect vacation plans that are already in the works at the time of hire Not necessarily true. We withdrew an offer just last week from a prospective hire. You are eligible for vacation time off after six months continuous employment. No exceptions. At least they told us about the potential confilct ahead of time, saved us from firing them later.

I understand that which is why I said "most." ;) As an HR Director, I have never seen a new employee denied a pre-planned vacation if discussed before the start date. We work hard to find the right people and respect that they have made plans before making a job change. Also, from the employee side, in my career, I have made a good number of job changes and never had a problem (since I ALWAYS have a vacation planned :)). While, every business has different needs, I still believe "most" is a true statement.
nybumpkin Posted April 13, 2011 #16 Share Posted April 13, 2011 While, every business has different needs, I still believe "most" is a true statement. Not when you're in the education business. We had to cancel our February cruise when DH took a teaching job at a community college. And since our kids' school schedule and DH's schedule don't match, we're back to summer cruises only.:(

Again, I never said ALL employers will understand. It depends entirely on the type of business.
