I am sailing next week and am wondering if my 3G iPad will work out at sea? I would like to stay in touch with family without paying the ships Internet fee.

No, u must use the wifi on the ship. Once the ship sails you won't have access to 3G network on the ship.

The 3G iPad will fall back to an "Edge" (slower) network if that's available. However, the cellular service on the ship is considered international, so your existing 3G data plan won't cover it. AT&T does offer international data for the iPad, but it's a very expensive add-on.

 

You're probably better off using the ship's WiFi. That's what I did last year with my iPad. It worked quite well for me. You'll still have to pay, but I think that the cost is more reasonable.
