leswor Posted May 11, 2011 #1 Share Posted May 11, 2011 Hi everyone, we are going to Norway on Queen Victoria on 29 May. Visiting Bergen, Alesund, Gerainger and Stavanger. In Gerainger choice of two ship excursions - Birksdal Glacier and Mount Dalsniba. I don't know anything about the Birksdal glacier. Which would be more interesting excursion with 80year old mother. Rare TLCOhio Posted May 11, 2011 #3 Share Posted May 11, 2011 Hi everyone, we are going to Norway on Queen Victoria on 29 May. Visiting Bergen, Alesund, Gerainger and Stavanger. In Gerainger choice of two ship excursions - Birksdal Glacier and Mount Dalsniba. I don't know anything about the Birksdal glacier. Which would be more interesting excursion with 80year old mother. We did not visit this site, but you can check this website to get added info: http://www.nordfjord.no/en/ You can e-mail them at: mail@nordfjord.no They note that "Nordfjord is the gateway to the glaciers, and the famous Briksdal Glacier is the most visited glacier in Norway." From: http://www.visitnorway.com/en/Product/?pid=32752 they note: "The huge Briksdal Glacier forms part of the Jostedal Glacier National Park. The wild glacier slope plunges from a height of 1200 metres down to the lush, narrow Briksdalen valley - a sight that attract 300,000 visitors from all over the world each year. Briksdalsbreen Glacier lies at the end of enchanting Oldedal valley, about 20 km from Olden. From the mountain lodge it is 3 km on a gravel road up to the glacier. You can walk there or be driven in open cars. Briksdal glacier mountain lodge is open from medio April to Medio October. Glacier safari, restaurant and a large souvenir boutique." THANKS! Enjoy! offonhols Posted May 12, 2011 #4 Share Posted May 12, 2011 Briksdal Glacier is one of the most easily accessible ways to get close to a glacier. However it does involve walking up a steep road, or getting a 'land train' so it would depend on mobility as to whether this would be suitable for your group. Probably a fairly long coach ride from Gerainger too. Gerainger itself is beautiful. Briksdal is more easily reached from Olden. It is on our list to do in August. We last visited Briksdal in 1998 so interested to see how much it has changed, and looking forward to showing our boys an interesting geographical phenomenon in a beautiful setting.
