Good News for NZ Economy

Recommended Posts

Thought I'd post a GOOD news story. Heaven knows, our NZ friends need some. From stuff.co.nz 21/5/2011

NZ sailing towards cruise-ship record

A record 200,000 cruise ship passengers are set to call at New Zealand ports in the coming season, with much of the increase coming from the United States.

In recent seasons Australians have dominated the market, but this year there looks like being about as many Americans.

"It's a big step," Cruise New Zealand chairman Craig Harris said. "The Americans have come back to the market, as new vessels come on stream."

Last year's cruise-visitor total was 138,000, and only 7000 of the increase this season were coming for the Rugby World Cup, Mr Harris said.

An economic impact study by Cruise NZ last year estimated the ships would bring direct spending of $318.6 million and a total contribution of $362.7m to the country, supporting 5800 jobs.

"When they are in port, the passengers spend about $110 a day in cash, but they also pay for tours etcetera on board, and that money goes to the tour operators," Mr Harris said.

"Altogether they probably spend $140-$150 a day, at a guess. We are researching that, and also how much the crews spend."

As well as spending on shore by passengers and crews, the cruise ships boosted the economy by spending on items such as food, fuel and port fees. Over the coming October to April season, 80 cruise ships will visit Wellington and 67 will visit Napier.

That is a lot of passengers spending their dollars! NZ is certainly a beaut place to visit!

We have just booked a land holiday there for January 2012. Looking forward to spending time on the West coast where the cruise ships don't usually go.
