Document check for NZ passports holders cruising

Hi, cruising the Western Caribbean and just wondering what sort of passport/document check anyone has experienced there and in particular in Cozumel. Travelling on NZ passports as a solo parent with an Australian child with a different surname? Had heard Mexico can be strict on entry of solo parents?

If you were on a land trip I would say WHOA! but on a cruise you are probably OK They generally need a Notarized statement from the absent parent (parents if taking friend kids or grandchildren)
