We are finishing an Alaskan cruise in Vancouver and unfortunately have to fly home that day. We do however have many hours to kill and thought the best option may be to hire a driver (with a car large enough to manage 4 peoples luggage) and see what we can of a city we will need to come back to at some stage. Can anyone suggest a company?

yes, aerocar or star limo are both great companies.

All of the limo companies provide this service. Likely Aerocar is the most reliable as they have the contract with the airport. Their rate is $65/hr which at first glance takes the wind out of my sails but when you look at the cost of a 4 hr tour...well it is kind of in line. However to that rate you do need to add 12% tax and a gratuity. Here is a link for your convenience.

you could also rent a car downtown and return it at the airport.

To save a fair bit of money and still tour the main city sights (though not the ones across the harbour) store your bags at Canada Place (about $5 each) and take the hop-on bus which stops at street level of the cruise terminal. You can do the whole circuit once then decide where you want to get off/on the second time around. When you're finished, it's an easy spot from which to get to the airport.

Our tickets were good for unlimited use for 2 days. The open buses were our favorites because your view does not get chopped off at the roof line. It is like like riding around the city in a big convertible with the top down, and in Vancouver a lot of wonderful scenery and architecture is up above the roof line.
