raudacruise Posted March 17, 2005 #1 Share Posted March 17, 2005 Given all these discussions about large ships thought I would start a YAT (yet another thread) to keep things a little cleaner. As many know, a lot of ships built or projected will not fit through the Panama Canal. Not just cruise ships but also supertankers and LNG ships. There has been serious discussion on adding a new set of locks for them. See: http://www.pancanal.com/eng/cgi-bin/news/boletin.cgi?submit=Consulta&item=160 Note that somebody from Carnival was there. This is the panama canal authority. The questions are: 1. Can they pay for it? Estimates are that it will cost 1/2 of Panama's GDP. 2. How much resistance will there be from the public? Some folks are going to be displaced and there is the possibility that some water might have to be diverted to Gatun Lake.
