mikedw Posted June 19, 2011 #1 Share Posted June 19, 2011 My wife and I will be driving from Maryland to Port Canaveral for our June 2nd sailing on the Carnival Dream. Due to my wife's disability, we have Handicapped Tags and the suv is modified with a scooter lift and scooter and the driver's seat and pedals are raised so she can drive it. My question is do we just have to show them that for the free parking or what else do they require? Thanks for your help.
MotoRacer598 Posted June 20, 2011 #2 Share Posted June 20, 2011 heres what their site says. I have the toll permit since i'm from Fl but sounds like you'll be fine. Special parking spaces are provided. The parking fee is waived for vehicles that: 1. Have special equipment such as ramps, lifts, foot or hand controls; or 2. Display the Florida Toll Exemption permit. (Call 800-983-2435 ext. 2 to apply for an exemption form.)

jackretired Posted July 12, 2011 #4 Share Posted July 12, 2011 I had to show them my lift. But no problem.
cruisingran Posted July 19, 2011 #5 Share Posted July 19, 2011 Do you know if you use a manual wheelchair if they waive the fee? We are going on a cruise this upcoming weekend and my hubby is making me try to get into a shuttle at the hotel to save the money for parking. This is a total embarassment for me to have my family try to lift and push me into the vans they usually have. TIA
katisdale Posted July 20, 2011 #6 Share Posted July 20, 2011 Only if the car is modified in some way for the wheelchair/scooter. I did not get the free parking when we chose to drive our Prius to the port rather than the lift equipped SUV. I had the handicapped tag and even bought a picture of the SUV with lift. I didn't expect to get free parking and I didn't. If the hotel offers a free shuttle to the port for the non-handicapped they are required to provide accessible transfer if needed. cruisingran Posted July 20, 2011 #7 Share Posted July 20, 2011 Thanks for the information - I will check on it when we get there. Otherwise I may take a taxi by myself and meet the rest at the port.

I don't care about free parking but is other handicapped parking available? Just like you would find at an airport for instance?
FrancescaH Posted July 30, 2011 #9 Share Posted July 30, 2011 You can use the handicapped parking if you have the appropriate permit, it's just not free unless you require modifications for the sake of a chair, etc. The parking is generally most of the front row closest to the terminal of outside parking, along the edge of the garage, or the row closest to the terminal inside the garage. There are plenty of parking guys who can point you to the right sections.
Snookie415 Posted July 31, 2011 #10 Share Posted July 31, 2011 I had to pay to park there last year and I drive a big van with a hang tag and my WC DD was in the back. I didn't know to ask about free parking, wish I had! They certainly didn't offer it. I have already checked into the parking in Miami and have everything their website says they require. I will post back how that works out for us!!
momof3cruisers Posted July 31, 2011 #11 Share Posted July 31, 2011 Thanks Francesca. That is what I figured but I wanted to be sure.
Escrowgal Posted August 8, 2011 #12 Share Posted August 8, 2011 We parked there earlier this year, didn't have our permit yet but when she was the wheelchair in the back, waived us right on through to hc area and the was no parking fee.
