Alaska Salmon Bakes

This is our first trip to Alaska and we would like some feedback as to whether it's better to do a salmon bake through the cruise line or do one on our own or just go to a restaurant. Also, which city is best for it, Ketchikan, Skagway or Juneau?

A salmon bake will cost you a lot of money for what you get. My opinion. I prefer a known restaurant such as the Thane Ore House in Juneau where you can order what you want off the menu.

 

If you telephone them, they will send a free shuttle to pick you up at the dock. The grounds are lovely and the experience is a much nicer one.

It's strictly a tourist thing, similar to Hawaiian Luaus. If that is what you want...go for it. However, you'll possibly get better salmon at a good restaurant.

Why is it they have salmon bakes but not salmon BBQ's. I think bbq'd salmon is much better.:confused:

I also will agree, that a top choice for salmon, in my opinion is Thane Ore House out of Juneau. Superb salmon. :) I have been to three different salmon bakes, yes, good salmon.
