sailormd Posted June 22, 2011 #1 Share Posted June 22, 2011 Can anyone tell me how far it is from the Venice airport to the dock for our upcoming Insignia departure? Is it necessary to take a water taxi? Many thanks for any information.

Is it necessary to take a water taxi? Many thanks for any information. Although it's not that far, it's more fun to take a water taxi...and more expensive. On our last visit to Venice, we took the water taxi to our hotel and then one to the ship. Our "driver" started at the top of the grand canal & then all the way down to the Luna Hotel Baglioni. sailormd Posted June 22, 2011 Author #3 Share Posted June 22, 2011 Did you travel by private water taxi, or is there a public taxi? What was the fare per person? Is the airport located on the canal? Details, please! Thanks!

Details, please! Thanks! 1. Private taxi booked in the airport after collecting luggage. 2. Don't remember the tariff...it was for both of us...At the time the Euro was less than the USD. 3. The airport is not on the canal. It's located on the mainland kind of adjacent and kind of across from Venice...if that makes any sense. If you have access to Google Earth, You can get a better idea of the airport's location
Rare LHT28 Posted June 22, 2011 #5 Share Posted June 22, 2011 There are also land taxis @ a much cheaper rate than the water taxi but if you want to spend the extra $$ for the experience of arriving by water ...;)
Senior Citizen Posted June 22, 2011 #6 Share Posted June 22, 2011 There are a variety of ways to get to your ship from the airport: 1. water taxi which is very costly 2. land taxi 3. bus to Plaza Espana (or whatever the name of the end of the route is called) next to the train station. From there, you can jump on a vaporetto to the stop near the dock. Or, you can take a taxi from the bus stop to the ship. Option 3, while the most economical way to get to the ship, depends on your tolerance for this type of adventure. Another factor in this equation is the dock where your ship will be. The one I am thinking about is the one on the Giudecca Canal, just down from the Stucky Molina Hilton.
Dmgmd50 Posted June 22, 2011 #7 Share Posted June 22, 2011 Does your ship overnight in Venice? If so, I would take a land taxi which is more reasonable from the airport to the dock, and then after you've checked onto the ship, you can take a boat trip down the Grand Canal. Maybe a little less glamorous, but a lot more reasonable.
canuck.qc Posted June 22, 2011 #8 Share Posted June 22, 2011 We were there last June on our Insignia cruise. There is a bus that goes from airport to train station/vice versa which is very inexpensive. From there you can hop on a vaporetto to/from your hotel. Sounds complicated, but not a problem. If you want the 'private water taxi' experience...chances are your hotel will offer a FREE private water taxi to Murano (we booked the time we wanted at the reception desk of our hotel) this was a service that Venice offered their visitors.. worth checking with your hotel if they offer this service. Venice is very easy to get around by public transport, explore and enjoy!

We are looking into staying at the Luna Hotel Baglioni - did you stay there and how was it? We are also looking at the L'Hotel Bauer - are you familiar with that one too? Would appreciate your comments. Also wondering about the Metropole and the Westin Europa and Regina. Need to make reservations for Nov. 2011 for an overnight in Venice. Thank you. new salt Posted June 23, 2011 #10 Share Posted June 23, 2011 There is also a water bus (vaporetto) that runs from the airport to St Mark's Square, I think it was something in the region of €15 but can't be sure; we used it to get to the airport from St Mark's Square. Fro St Mark's you would then need to pick up a water bus to Piazza Roma and the people mover to the port. I would say your best option is the coach from the airport and dump luggage then enjoy Venice - the most astonishing city I have ever visited. Loved the Baglioni...because the airline put one bag on the wrong flight (we got it the next day), they must have felt sorry for us...upgraded us to a beautiful suite overlooking the Grand Canal. Have not been there since the mid 90s, but I doubt it has changed much. A beautiful hotel...one of the oldest in Venice yet it has all the modern conveniences. Also adjacent to the Piazza San Marco. Know nothing about the other hotels you mentioned.
