Need another opinion on a dress

Recommended Posts

I tried on this dress today and the fabric, fit and length was a good combination for me (though the color is more "happy" than I tend to wear ). I was thinking about buying it for an upcoming RCCL (Navigator) cruise. Would it do for the less formal of the two dress-up dinners?

Any thoughts?

I think it would work very well--it's pretty!

First of all, I think this dress is super cute!

I'd definitely wear it to a dress-up dinner; throw in some fancy shoes and jewelry and you'll be perfect :)

It's not exactly "formal", but it will do on a cruise. 80% of the women will be in black...how boring! Don't hesitate to wear colors! It's a pretty dress!

That's exactly my issue. I wear black all the time! I work in the banking industry where black, gray and blue-black are the staples of my Monday to Friday. I figure black/charcoal for the formal night (probably the same satin dress I wore on the Disney Magic in 2005...haven't worn it since) and my "men" (i.e., teenage sons and spouse) will go all black (but not tuxes). I just want something for the other dressy night. I feel like all the dresses I try are either too old (make me look frumpy) or too young (less forgiving of the standard lumps and bumps that come with being 40++).

I have work clothes (super conservative business attire) and home clothes (weekend casual). Finding smart looking vacation wear that's made for 40++ women (not 20 year olds) seems impossible.

Rant...rant...wasn't the cruise supposed to be fun??

Love it!

Would be great in the evening with heels and jewellery, PLUS . . .

You could also wear it during the day with flats.

DH and I like to go to a good restaurant, casino or similar in port when we can, so I always pack a comfortable but nice dress for such occasions. Makes for good photos too - you'll be glad you wore something nice when you look back on them! ;)LOL.

I love the color of your dress, too! Go with it!!

I live in NE and love to wear light pastels in the summer. One summer I took a day trip to NYC with my family and wore white capris, a bright top and a hawaiian style shirt. I felt like a tourist from Miami :o Everyone was in dark colors and I stuck out like a sore thumb!!

After a miserable winter of living in jeans and black/dark jerseys everything I purchased for the cruise is white, white, WHITE!!! :D

I did buy the dress. I think it fits great (perfect length, which at my 5'8" is never a sure thing) and feels so good on. I plan to wear it on the less formal of the two formal evenings. I even paired it with a pair of raspberry red mules, which I already had!

Thanks to all.

Where did you purchase this cute dress? :D

Hello Bonnie,

It's Lauren by Ralph Lauren. I bought it at The Bay, which is a Canadian store (kind of like JC Penny in the US). The dress retailed for CA$175, but it was 50% off (end of season...yummy). You would probably find the dress anywhere they carry RL though. It's from this year's spring/summer collection. I am very happy with it (and hope I still will be come winter ). I'm in pretty good shape but I have the standard lumps and bumps of any 45-year-old woman, and I find the fabric has just the right mix of stiffness (not too clingy) and stretch (I can breathe, walk and yes, I should even be able to eat comfortably). I also have broad strong shoulders (from sports) and I no longer feel comfortable when dresses hit above the knee (not so classy when one sits down). Empire waists and V necklines also make the most of my long torso and not-so-feminine athletic build. "Ralph" must have made this dress just for me!! :)

Now if I could buy it in black and white...I'd be ecstatic!! I'd even pay full price...it would be a great dress for my son's grad next year.

Let me know if you want more info.
