Non-Smoker Living in a Smoking World

CC#115

We're cruising on the Carnival Triumph. Are there designated non-smoking areas for pools or bars or dining rooms or decks, etc.? Or is smoking allowed pretty much anywhere unless a "No Smoking" sign is posted?

Just curious! I'm not advocating for tobacco-free ships, just would like to know if hanging out in tobacco-free zones (besides my cabin) is a possibility from time to time. :)

Thanks!!

Guest acknowledges that Carnival’s vessels contain non-smoking sections. Guest agrees to refrain from smoking in those sections and agrees that Carnival has the right to disembark the Guest for failure to observe Carnival’s non-smoking policy.

The only place I can think of where the smoke may bother you is in the casino, and right outside the Main Lounge right after the show has ended. (smokers need their fix after 45 min :D ) After a few hours on board most smokers will have found out where they can and can't smoke and most non-smokers will have scouted out the smoke-free areas as well. Enjoy your cruise...

Usually you wont notice it, but for sure in the Casino, another small lounge next to the Main lobby, I hate this spot because during Formal nights its next to one of the Picture taking areas and you can see them smokers packing it in, the Smoke drifts over to where you are standing in line to take your picture. Im sure other Cruisers know what area Im talking about. In any case there is no smoking in the Dining room, thats a Plus.

I went on the Carnival Paradise, the only Smokeless ship in the cruise industry, it was a hit and it was always sold out, but I heard resently it back to smoking, not sure.

The Paradise ceased being non-smoking after the repo cruise to SoCal last September.

Typical:rolleyes:

Huh? How was it a "hit"? If it was such a "hit" it would still be a non-smoking ship.

Almost every ship that ever leaves port is "sold out". The operative phrase the ship owners are concerned with is AT WHAT PRICE ? The Paradise was the MOST HEAVILY-DISCOUNTED ship in Carnival's fleet.

The problem with the Paradise was lack of balconies and limited itinerary. We all want our choice of places to go, and Paradise was limited in that respect and only has a few balconies (all of which are suites). Many people want their choice of cabins and itineraries. That would explain why it wasn't sold out. If Carnival made one of the Spirit class or other larger ships smoke free, the ships would sell out FAST. The larger ships have many balconies and rotate itineraries every week.

I sailed twice on the Paradise just because it was a non-smoking ship and not for the price. I would be going on it this December and not the Valor if it was still non-smoking and in Florida. To me it wasn’t price but the smoke free environment.

However I am just a small minority in this thinking because the ship did lose money and it has now moved on.

I am curious to see how it is on the Valor, our town has been smoke free in public buildings many years now and it is nice to sit down to diner with no smoke in the room.

It just doesn't work, and CCL realized this. It wasn't the ship -- with a non-smoking ship, you lose just about ALL group bookings -- which is a HUGE portion of your business right there. Not to mention, as the previous posters said, Paradise had by FAR the lowest rates in the fleet -- more than that, her onboard revenue was nowhere NEAR the rest of the fleet. Non-smokers just tended to drink and gamble a LOT less than smokers...

One day in the not so distant future there will be smoke free ships sailing eash of the itinerarys. I know it hasn't work financially in the past but I do believe passengers will start to demand smoke free ships as more and more states and cities have wide spread bans on lighting up.

I agree Splatitudes on both of my sailing Most of the bars seemed dead and casino was never full.

The ship was however sold out both times I went. The shore excursions seemed to sell out very quick as well. I am not sure how much profit they make on ship booked shore excursions but it must have been something.

Never once saw someone overly drunk and I must say the ship smelled wonderful with the lack of smoke on it.

But to be realistic what company wants to continue running at a loss to please such a select crowd.

I feel in a very near future however we may yet see the smoker’s numbers decline and may see the resurgence of smoke free ship(s)

I think you got it when saying smokers are also heavy drinkers and gamblers. This would explain why Disney is so high priced over other lines. No Casino means no gamblers. No gamblers, no drinkers, no smokers, no extra revenue.

I too hope to live to see the day all ships become non-smoking vessels or at least contained to a small area on the top deck at the back so all their smoke blows up and away.

Carnival is reducing smoking areas more & more.....to try & please everyone. Don't think the non-smoking vessels idea will ever work. I, for one would no longer spend my vacation money for cruises. 15_4_115.gif

I can honestly say I have never been bothered by a smoker on a cruise ship. If someone is smoking in the non smoking section and it bothers me there are people to ask (I have learned the hard way not to confront someone who is addicted to anything and nicotine is an addiction). Most smokers are courteous and pleasent and do not want you to suffer because of thier addiction. That said there are morons everywhere.

Truthfully smoking has become so "bad" in most peoples eyes that smokers have to live in non smoking worlds. Endure lectures by people who want to "heal them" and in general have life made miserable for them. As long as they don't blow it in my face it is all good.

What's so bad with being told it's not good for you? Addiction or not the constant reminder it's going to shorten your life may take effect eventually. I don't think we have to be reminded that murder and rape is wrong. I can't speak for why a smoker has to smoke but I can speak for why I don't. It's nasty!

We're also forgetting the proven dangers of second hand smoke. If a smoker wants to do harm to their own body, so be it. However, when their actions cause me to increase the risk to my health or my family's health, I draw the line. In regard to casinos, it may not be that non-smokers gamble less, but rather gamble less when surrounded by obnoxious smoke!

Ok - I wasn't going to get all caught up in this but I have to say something. You're comparing smoking to murder and rape?!? Smokers are adults making a conscious decision. They know it's bad for them. Do you really think that having someone come up and say "Did you know that's bad for you" is going to make the smoker stop and say "Hey, I wasn't aware of that - thanks!" ?? Would you like to be reminded every time you had a drink that it could cause liver disease? Or how about if you use aerosol spray and what you're doing to our atmosphere?

Anyway, to the original question asked - smoking is allowed in designated areas only. Actually, there are more non-smoking areas than smoking. I, for one, refuse to light up anywhere it's not permitted. I know there are some inconsiderate smokers who won't follow the rules, but I've been known to "remind" a few people of the rules. And Yes, I am a smoker. Not proud of it, but VERY considerate of others around me. Just because I choose to smoke doesn't mean you need to. :)

The problem I find in restuarants and such with people smoking is that I can smell it and it effects me. If people want to smoke, I think they should do so outside or in a completely separate area, not just behind a wall.

I agree with the above post. Comparing smoking to murder or rape is ludicrous.

If anyone lives in someone else's world it's the smoker.

You can't smoke anywhere anymore. Not planes, taxis, trains, public buildings, restaurants, work, schools etc.

I respect that it is harmful for someone who doesn't smoke to have breathe second hand smoke and I agree wholeheartedly that the non smoker shouldn't have to put up with that. But the majority of the smoking areas on the ship are outside.

I don't allow smoking in my own house and I smoke!

But really folks to say something to a smoker as far as "it's bad for your health".. that's plain rude. I don't say things to people who are drinking or gambling their houses away or are grotesquely overweight!!!
