I don't think that it is 'widely accepted' except for car rentals and at jewelery stores (and sometimes they will state a preference towards Visa or MasterCard because of their fees).

 

We have a Capitol One card that we use when traveling outside the US because they don't charge a 3% fee for foreign transactions, which our old card charged, even if the transaction was in US dollars.

 

Check your card for such fees.
