Is there Smoking Allowed inside the DAWN?

No smoking in DR and main showroom but lounges, casinos and pretty much the rest of the ship including staterooms and balconies are smoking areas.

They do divide the ship in half on open deck areas but few smokers abide by these rules. You will run into heavy smoke outside the DR, the main showroom and any of the public bathrooms. Even the elevators can become full of smoke as the smokers enter having just taken that last inhaled puff and then they exhale just when the doors are closed. While NCL does do a great job at elimanting the stale left over smoke from the previous smoker in the staterooms they can never remove it all from the drapes, bedspreads, walls and ceilings. I've been in staterooms where you can actually see the yellow nicotine stains in the ceilings. You take your finger and rub across it and you have a yellowish brown finger. Sad but true. Your best bet is the newer ships but the Dawn is getting some age on her. You can pick your ship, pick your week to go but you can never pick the other 2000+ people going with you that week. Chances are good that many will be heavy smokers.

I think that is a bit over stated for the Dawn. They have made some changes that I posted on the other smoking thread. The trandition ashtrays by the elevators are now planters. The exits to the showroom have no ashtrays but are by the casino so most smokers duck in there. The only dining room that has a smoking area outside is Impressions and that is in the bar located there.

No smoking in the hallways or bathrooms. It is by no means smoke free but you don't find the clusters of smokers (and I am one) outside the elevators, dining rooms, shows, and hallways as I have on other ships and in past years.

Will you run into the occasional inconsiderate smoker heading down the hall with a smoke. Yes. For the most part port side ondeck is smoking and most seem to follow it . If they don't shame on those that don't speak up.

After finding out that smoking was allowed on port side, I called to change my cabin from port to starboard. My TA called NCL to check which side allowed smoking and was told that starboard was the smoking side. We asked her to double check and she reconfirmed smoking was on the starboard side. Is it port or starboard?

Don't bother to change your cabin. All cabins are smoking optional. In the bars and on deck the smoking side is Port. No question about it.

I hate to disagree with you Shoreguy but on every NCL cruise I've been on, starboard was the smoking side. All cabins on NCL ships are smoking optional but the smoking side of the ship is starboard. Unless something has changed in the last 11 months.

Unless Starboard is the left side of the ship I can tell you on the Dawn And Sun that smoking was port.

I remeber when cabins used to be starboard smoking and port none smoking, It was that way on the Norway. I remember since I ended up in a port side cabin one time and they said no problem and brought an ashtray :D

On the Dawn, the PORT side was the smoking side of the ship (on the outside decks). The tables on the starboard side were CLEARLY marked with no smoking emblems. Ashtrays were on the port side only. And I have to say that passengers abided by the smoking/no smoking areas.

Having just returned from two cruises on the Dawn in the last six months, I can confirm that smoking is limited to the port side on outside decks of the Dawn. Hardly a reason to change a port side cabin as the fellow on the next veranda could be smoking no matter what side of the ship your cabin is on.

The one place I found to be smoke heavy every time I went into it was the Spinnaker Lounge on Dawn (I was in the Casino for a total of 15 minutes, so can't remark upon that). I don't know if the ventilation system elsewhere on the ship worked a lot better, but I found I had to leave there a few times just from the smell, and my clothes retained the odor of smoke afterward. It was the only place I noted smoke on the ship.

Yep...then things have changed. All 4 times on the Dream and all four times on the Wind the starboard (right) side was smoking. They would always hold the trivia in the disco on the port side and when I smoked I didn't want to go because it was a long time with a drink without a smoke. ;) Back when you could choose a smoking versus non smoking room, I was always starboard side for a smoking room.

On the Star, I woud go to the Star Bar and sit at the actual bar (starboard side) to be able to smoke. The piano was on the port side of the room and no smoking there. I don't remember about the Norway because when I sailed her, I didn't smoke.

Things do change I guess..... Thanks for the information.

A right answer from a cruise rep? You got to be kidding right? It will never happen. I think you are right, they've never been on a cruise or a ship!

They get paid to answer phones and give some sort of answer to please.

Does anyone know why NCL would seem to be going backwards in keeping up with the times when they went from having non-smoking rooms to not having them now? How long ago was that? I agree it is hard to know which side is which until you acutally get there and walk the deck and look. They usually will post it in the daily paper you get which side is which too. I didn't mean to come down so hard on smoking on the Dawn per se, but it is a smoking ship and you will have those few that seem to own the whole ship with their smoking rights everywhere. Removing ashtrays by the elevator will not stop a smoking from leaving their room with a cig. going straight to the elevator and still doing the inhale thing before they enter the elevator and then let it out inside the elevator after the doors close. Come on people, a professional smoker knows how to snuff out a cig. in his hand and hide it in the cup of their hand until they get off the elevator and then light it back up. Whatever they do it is possible to run into smoke in an elevator on any smoking ship.

shoreguy, when we were on the dawn together, it WAS the starboard side. on my last cruise, on the spirit, it was the port side. i got sooo confused. regards from arnie. happy sailing!

Very confusing topic - I will add to it. In the Star Bar it is in fact on the Starboard side since that is where the bar is and it is away from the back dining room for Cagney's. If you walk out the door to smoke outside you need to go over to the port side.

Not to worry if you light up in the wrong place you will be able to tell by the reaction of those around

We can wrap this up with a simple answer:

Is there Smoking Allowed inside the DAWN?

With the sinking of the Carnival Paradise it's probably safe to say there is smoking going on inside of ALL ships on ALL lines. I'm sure when another all non-smoking ship is built and christened you will read about it hear first.

For superdxa & Dolphins...

Being asthmatic, I am VERY sensitive to cigarette/cigar/pipe smoke. I have to say, that I didn't really encounter any problems on the DAWN. I've learned to stay away from heavy smoke areas like the casino when those areas are full of people. I thought that the area near the HAVANA CLUB (cigar area) would be toxic, but I have to say that the doors to the HAVANA CLUB are kept shut and the ventilation in that area was so good that you wouldn't know it was a cigar club (unless you have the deck plans in your hand and are reading the designation on the door).

The ONLY time that I was "offended" by smoke was one afternoon while "enjoying" my balcony while we were at sea...someone on a balcony further forward on the ship was "enjoying" their cigar. Needless to say, the "fumes" drifted back, as the ship was moving, and "soiled" the air quality for those of us sensitive to the smoke. I missed an enjoyable balcony moment, but there were more to come during the rest of the cruise.

In the hope of eliminating the problem on my next DAWN cruise, I booked a balcony cabin in the forward section of the ship. Now I pray that the passengers in the adjacent cabins will be non-smokers like myself.

Everyone has the right to enjoy their cruise and we shouldn't force our needs for smoke-free environments or the right to smoke wherever we want on to those around us. If everyone is observant, courteous, and abides by the "designated" areas for smoking on the ship, I think ALL passengers can have a great time!

im hoping there isnt going to be smoking in dining areas and in entertainment places. i hope smoking is just for the outside

What about smoking, drinking and gambling on the ship?

Smoking is permitted in designated areas in the bars and outside on open decks. All other areas on board ship are non-smoking. Guests must be age 21 to purchase or drink alcohol and age 18 to gamble on the ship. If a guest under age 18 wins in the casino and cannot provide proof of age, he or she will not be paid the winnings. There is no casino aboard Pride of Aloha, Pride of America and Norwegian Wind. Guests are not allowed to bring on board the vessel any alcoholic beverages of any kind.
