Transportation in San Diego

Recommended Posts

My husband is in a wheelchair; but can transfer from the chair to a car or SUV. I'm hoping someone can recommend a company that would have a taxi or town car that would be large enough to hold cruise luggage, a wheelchair and 2 people.

We would need it from the airport to our hotel and then from the hotel to the cruise port. Are there larger taxis at the airport?

Thanks for your help.

There are many regular sedan taxis at the SD airport. If the wheelchair folds and he can transfer to the car, this may work for you. If you need for him to ride in his wheelchair in the vehicle, we do NOT have accessible (ramp van) cabs at the airport, but, with prior reservations, SuperShuttle/Cloud 9 does have wheelchair lift van transportation. It would run you approx. $10 each via this from the airport to the pier or most downtown motels/hotels. Our city buses are also all accessible, but this can be a hassle with much luggage.

You cannot pick your company for a cab at the airport, nor hail one yourself. There is a cab dispatcher at the cab stand at both terminals, and they will make sure you get the next cab in line that meets your needs. Not all cab companies have an airport 'medallion' which is their license to pick up at the airport, and they have a line/waiting system that is strictly enforced. When you return to the airport from the cruise, that is not an issue, and the cab does not need a medallion to drop of at the airport...only to pick-up.

Depending on which hotel you are staying at, they will usually call a cab for you, or you can again use SuperShuttle (with a reservation). They offer either shared or exclusive vans (lift and non-lift), or town cars.

Very true, on our last trip to San Diego, there were 4 of us and the dispatcher called a van (taxi) to the front of the line for us. This was much cheaper than Super Shuttle.
