western caribbean Star

I just made a reservation for Nov 2012 on a western caribbean cruise on the Star. This will be my first time on this ship. Our last two cruises have been on the Pearl and we have been very happy. We are booked in a 2 bedroom family suite on the 11th deck. Does anyone have an opinion as to whether port or starboard would be preferable? Ports are Belize, Costa Maya, Cozumel, Roatan. I appreciate any help!

Just did this itinerary on the Spirit, and have done it on other ships too.

Belize: It doesn't matter. This is a tender port, and you are anchored way off shore. Which way the ship faces depends on the prevailing wind.

Costa Maya: You never can tell. I've been there 3 times and been docked 3 different ways: Portside to, Starboard to, and bow to the shore.

Cozumel: Generally the port side of the ship will face the town.

Roatan: This is about the only sure one. Port side of the ship will face the island.

Hope that helps.

Well, I said "generally" with Cozumel. Most of the time it's been port side to, but it has been starboard side on both NCL and on other cruise lines.

As for Roatan, both times I've been there it was port side to the town.

I guess what this proves it that there are so many variables - The captain, the port director, the port pilot, whether one of the cable winches on one side of the ship is broken....and so on. That all makes it hard to predict.

For the OP, look at it this way: You'll either have a nice view of the port, or a nice view of the Caribbean ocean. You can always go up on the upper decks to see the other view, right?

I was very interested in the replies to this question because we will be doing the Western Caribbean on the Star in February.

Looks like six of one and a half dozen of the other!

But it's all good cause we'll be on vacation and cruising. Life's Good!

At many ports, the side of the ship that needs paint or service will be positioned next to the dock. You won't know ahead of time which it will be.

So I just have to make sure that my side of the ship needs to be repainted! <evil_grin>:D</evil_grin>

I'm also taking the Star in November, and I chose port side. Not because of how she's docked at each port, but I figured on the port side I could at least see some of the Florida coastline on the way south.

As well, after Roatan I think I would have a better chance of seeing some coastline as we worked our way northward up to Cozumel. Sunsets would be on the port side for 5 of the 7 nights too, I believe.

I am taking my first cruise in December on the Star and never even thought of the side of the ship I will be on in relation to ports or sunsets. I just love this Board!!!

Thanks for the info.
