well, I'll attempt an answer for you...........from what I've read, the internet is still finding it's way to this port and not many are set up for credit cards right now........I could be wrong but it sounds as if this port would lean toward cash

maybe someone who's been there recently could give info on the traveler checks.........

If you go into Mahahual, recommended BTW, take cash. The more expensive of the tourist trap stores at the cruiseline built port of Costa Maya probably will take plastic or travelers checks. The "native" craft stalls will much prefer cash.

I know in Cozumel the stores that were gonna take my card was gonna charge me more then the price listed. Said it has something to do with being charged a US Surcharge plus tax to get the money.

I would take cash--small bills for smaller items. Some little vendors may tell you they dont have change for the 20 you have.

espeically in Majuahaul

I was there last month (Mar. 2005) and would recommend cash. We used plastic at one of the stores at the pier and it caused a fraud alert on our credit card and they added a $6 surcharge. You can use a ship ATM or maybe leftover cash from your casino winnings.;)

It's a good idea to call your credit card company before you leave home to tell them you'll be using the card out of the country. I got a call from the fraud department of Discover just the other day, because I started using that card again for more than my usual Sam's Club purchases - including a ~$2400 charge to pay for a cruise! You DON'T want your cards frozen while you're on vacation!
