book cabin for three and cancel if not needed? or book for two and add?

I remember this being brought up in the past, but don't remember the answer.

We are traveling with another couple. Their son may or may not be cruising with us, at this point just not sure. We plan on cruising in January 2012.

Would it be best to book a cabin that will hold 3 people and just book the cabin with two people and then if he comes, then add him...

OR should we book for all three and just cancel the third person in the cabin if he decides not to come.

Anyone have any suggestions?

i would book three, as there are times when the 3rd (and 4th) passenger limit has been reached and you can not add more to that stateroom. You would be safer to book all three in a cabin now, just in case the ship exceeds it's 3rd berth limits.
