Where To from Cannes?

Doing our own excursions from Cannes. But do we do Nice or Monte Carlo or both? Any advice or other suggested destinations welcome.

One nice thing about doing your own excursions is you can do as you please (its why we seldom take an organized excursion). From Cannes you have quite a few options depending on whether you want to rent a car or use public transit. Having a car really does expand your day since you can quickly move around between places such as St Paul de Vence, Antibes, Nice, etc. With public transit you are a bit more limited because of schedules and connections. If you want to do both Nice and Monte Carlo, that is pretty easy to do on your own by using the train. Other popular places like St Paul de Venice (our favorite town in the region) or Eze Village take a bit more planning (and time).

Keep in mind that it is the same train line that connects Cannes to (and this is in order) Antibes, Nice, and Monte Carlo. The most distant point among these is Monte Carlo which takes about 1 hour (by train) each way. So you might want to take a morning train (no reservations) to Monte Carlo (your furthest point) and explore that city. Then you can train (or take the #100 bus) back to Nice and spend some time in that city before catching a train back to Cannes.

the train is the best option as parking will be a pain for you. Also the stations in Antibes, Nice and Monaco are all very close to the city center.

Less you have a special reason to go to Monaco, I would skip it. Antibes is a real provence town and Nice is the capital of the cote d'azur. Monaco is a build up rich old man's playground with some interesting bits (casino in monte carlo) and monaco old town.

i would visit antibes old town and nice old town.
