Ferry from St Thomas to St John

We will be at the cruise port at St Thomas next week. We are interested in taking a ferry from there to st john to snorkel at Trunk Bay. Is this something we could safely do and still make it back to the cruise ship on time? How reliable is the ferry? What is the ferry schedule/how often do they run? Price for ferry? Where do you catch the ferry?
