new to NCL and leaving in 85 days for the Star! Just wondering if on line check in can be completed now or do I have to wait until closer to sailing?

You can do it now. It won't complete itself until final payment is received and processed by NCL. Then you will be advised that the Edocs are ready to be printed, which will include you "cruise ticket" page. But again, start the process now by supplying all the initial people info that is required in the first step. .

i do my online check-in after final payment.

As long as the link to online check-in is open and lets you in to do it, you can do it. Personally, I also prefer to do it after final payment but there's no real difference as far as I know.

I go ahead and take care of it as soon as I book, just one less thing to think about as we get closer to sailing. Also, I like to make sure everything is in order with the booking.

You can do it whenever you want. Personally, I do our online check-in as soon as I've booked a cruise. That way I know it's done and I can cross it off my 'to do' list.
