US dollars on mediterranean cruises?

Can anyone tell me whether they have needed US Dollars when cruising in the med - either on the ship or ashore?

Dollars, no; euros, yes (and even in some countries which do not officially take them). Although, who knows with the state of Europe and the euro at present?;)

USA dollars are not needed in the Mediterranean in any of the ports. For many countries the currency to be used would be the Euro. There are some countries where who are not part of the EU where their local currency would be used although some will take other currencies such as Euros,Brittish Pounds and USA currency.

On the ship, someone from the USA who wanted to leave a cash gratuity for a member of the staff would likely use USA currency. But folks from other areas of the World might end up using other currency such as Euros, British Pounds, etc. particularly if they had this cash on hand having converted their own local currency as part of this trip.
