sparkysj Posted October 23, 2011 #1 Share Posted October 23, 2011 We are thinking of taking a cruise here next year with our 3 kids and other family and are looking for some ideas for cheap/free ideas to do on the island. Our kids will be 21, 18 & 3 but will have a range of 6mos-60yrs. Any ideas would be really appreicated! Thank you. .
Ms411 Posted October 23, 2011 #2 Share Posted October 23, 2011 Small islands that depend on tourism can't afford to offer many free activities other then the beaches. You should rent vehicles for your group and drive to a few beaches. Cab fare will be expensive for your group since charges are per person. kcparrothead Posted October 23, 2011 #3 Share Posted October 23, 2011 Taxi over to Magens Bay - I think admission is only around $1. Get there early as it will get crowded, although it's a large beach.
Betsy's Mom Posted October 23, 2011 #4 Share Posted October 23, 2011 Entry to Magens Bay (named after the Magens family who donated the land to the people of the VI) is $4. per person without an Island ID card. It is a lovely beach, calm water, shade trees, food and drink. No snorkeling however. As mentioned transportation is expensive on St Thomas. Rates are set by the Government and there is no haggeling, but also no tipping as the driver owns the vehicle in most cases. Drive on the left also, roads are not up to mainland standards, narrow, curvey, poorly marked and can be very challenging to drive. We used to live there and it became too much of a hassle for us "old folks".:) Take a cab! B.

If you are going in the winter you might want to check the water temperatures of where you plan to visit in the Bahamas. Personally it is a little to cold for me to swim in the water there in the winter months.
