Cruise Day Upgrades?

Is it possible to get a free upgrade the day the cruise sails?

Just wondering if you can ask about an upgrade when you check in. My cruise is coming up this week and it still has openings in many categories and I was wondering if this was an option.

On my parent's last cruise in May 2010 on the Grandeur of the Seas, when they arrived at port for check-in they were upgraded from a superior balcony to a junior suite, I believe. The reason given was they had accidentally double booked their original room.

You may not find out about a free upgrade until you get to the pier, but it was probably issued beforehand and you simply didn't notice the change on your reservation in the computer.

You used to be able to pay for an upgrade at a very low price, however most ships have their higher category cabins filled by sail date (because they upgraded people into all the empty cabins beforehand), so there usually aren't upgraded rooms available anymore.

I think you have a better chance of winning big in the casino than getting an upgrade at the pier.

On every cruise I have been on they always have the sign out that says no upgrades and even asking results in a no.

It is like Donnak said. Upgrades are generally finalized a couple days before sailing at which point they print room keys and manifest for the ship.

The only way to get an upgrade at the pier is with last minute cancellations, such as snowstorms or sudden family illnesses. In those instances the line doesn't have time to do the upgrades using normal procedures so the pier coordinator's desk will sell the inexpensive upgrades. This is a separate revenue department and the usual Crown and Anchor discounts don't apply.

We did get an complimentary upgrade after boarding the ship once. I was chatting with the Loyalty Ambassador and asked if there were any upgrades available for D+ cruisers. We were in an Oceanview room and she arranged to move us to a balcony. Something like this rarely happens, though.
