NCL Determines Fate of Norway

 

In a long-anticipated announcement, Norwegian Cruise Line has finally determined the fate of Norway: The ship will be transferred to Star Cruises, NCL's parent company, and will be towed to Malaysia's Port Klang. A terse NCL statement says only that Star Cruises "intends to utilize the ship in a new venture, details of which will remain undisclosed for the time being."

 

Rumors of the future of the ill-fated ship, which suffered a tragic boiler explosion in 2002 that killed crew members, have been circulating wildly in the past month or so -- ever since NCL president Colin Veitch revealed that the company had set an internal end-of-March deadline for a decision. NCL has been maintaining Norway (to the tune of some $10 million) while shopping for a buyer it had hoped would be a company wanting to transform the ship into a floating hotel.

 

In the past few weeks, there was much talk that the decision would be to sell the storied vessel for the value of its scrap metal, but European shipping industry media had said that the ship would likely face environmental challenges during the scrapping process.
