Dreams Engine????

It seems that the Dream is currently making all her ports of call in Western Europe. I check the web cam every day. In addition, NCL is offering a deal on the 5/25 sailing to the Scandinavian Captials. They wouldn't be doing that if the sailing wasn't going to happen. I do remember reading something that NCL is not taking reservations for the return transatlantic trip. I could be that NCL will put Dream in Drydock after European/Scandinavian tours.

We are booked on the 9/10 Baltic and 9/22 Transatlantic -- sure hope the transatlantic isn't cancelled.

I booked the Transatlantic cruise on Thursday 4/15 without any trouble. My TA did say they were having engine problems but they have been fixed..

Just of the dream(Rome to Dover). The CC team will review in time, but no problems with any ports on this trip. Some of the crew did open up a bit later in the cruise and talked about the rough crossing but no mention of engine problems others may have heard something but not me.

Those of you going to the baltics through the kiel canal will be the last for a while as the dream is sailing out of seattle apparently next year and there will be no northern europe sailings!!

Enjoy while you can !!

Hi Everyone
I did post on the roll call board that all was ok with the Dream but I guess everyone would not look there. Like Phil we just got off the Dream and all was fine - We were told one of the 4 engines is playing up but this only caused a problem on a VERY rough Transatlantic crossing which would have been a problem anyway. We had no problems despite some very "choppy" patches in fact we arrived in Lisbon 2 hours early. Talking to some staff this has been blown out of all proportion - the Dream will dry dock when it returns to the US to get a good makeover. It is true the Dream will not be doing Europe next year it will go from Houston I think and will be replaced by the Sun in Europe. This will mean that this will be the last year for the Kiel Canal as the Dream is the only ship with a collapsable funnel. This is a great shame as apparently there is a Dream fan club along the canal who turn out in force when it goes through. One crew member thought that the itinerary may include the Norwegian Fiords instead.
Still "Cruise-lagged" so must go to bed - going to work today was awful. Will post a review later but had a great time and met wonderful people in our CC group.
Thank you all for helping make this cruise a memorable experience!!!

clemmie, thanks for the info!!

my sympathy on the "return to work" syndrome as well.

I almost don't want to cruise again as the final day waking up at the disembarkation port, flying home and facing work the next day, plummets me into the depths of dispair!!

 • 2 weeks later...
Just returned from the 4/19/04 London to Rome and we did have engine problems which changed our ports. Details will follow. Glad to learn that the Rome to London sailing had no engine problems; we were not as lucky we missed Barelona and Cannes and had port times cut short. We did add Gibraltar and Sete, France in exchange for ports we missed. Not 100% sure missing Cannes can be blamed on the ship's problems.

Please post a review at soon as you get a chance. We sail on the Dream 6/6/04 and are very curious about how things are going.

Thanks

I was also on the 4/19 Dream cruise from London to Rome (sorry we missed meeting, Wes!). There was an engine problem--basically one engine was down, which meant the ship had to travel more slowly, and had to put in at Gibraltar (not sure why). We were told a port would be cancelled, which would be Genoa, with Gibraltar as the replacement so to speak. The next day we were to dock in Barcelona, but the ship was refused docking privileges. It seems the Spanish govt decided to enforce some sort of regulation that had previously been ignored, one required if a ship docks in Gibraltar right before docking at a Spain port. (All related to the ongoing battle over whether Gibraltar should be returned to Spain or remain British). We went on the a small French port town called Sete, where we docked for the rest of the day. A nice enough town, but certainly not Barcelona.

I can't say how much of that snafu to blame on the ship, since any other ship or captain might have also ignored whatever regulation/paperwork was required to re-enter a Spanish port, as they'd been previously doing, but missing Barcelona was disappointing.

As for Cannes, missing this port was unrelated to the engine problems. It is a tender port and the winds were too strong to drop anchor and tender ashore. The captain tried Villefranche too, but that port had the same problem. Those things can happen, of course. We ended up going to Genoa instead, so at least we got back on of our original ports.

Other than those problems, the rest of the ports were very nice, weather-wise especially so in Lisbon and Cadiz.

If you are planning a trip on the Dream just bear in mind the ship seems to be having a recurring engine problem. It could mean a change in ports or shorter port times if it does recur. Hopefully the problem with Barcelona wouldn't happen again, since the captain and Norwegian (as well as other cruise lines) now know to follow regulations to the exact letter with the new Spanish govt.

I wanted to find the post on this board which indicated the Dream had engine problems on the way over to Europe, but I can't find it. When I originally read it, I asked my travel agent to check with NCL and he indicated NCL was not aware of any engine problems. Therefore, it was not a complete surprise when the captain indicated the Dream had engine problems and the itinerary would have to be modified. The modified itinerary indicated Genoa would be replaced by Gibraltar and we would have two and a half more hours in Cadiz. However when I look at the original schedule we were to have nine and a half hours in Cadiz and and the revised schedule gave us only nine. As it turned out we didn't make Barcelona as was described by juli17 in her post. IMHO the captain should have checked to see if the Dream had a slot in Barcelona before he revised the schedule to include Gibraltar.

While I agree that the captain is the one who makes the decisions about safety issues, his statement that we couldn't tender to Cannes due to the 60 miles an hour wind was an over statement of fact. The winds were not that high. I can't fault his decision, but the wind speed was no where near the 60 miles he stated.

When we were locked out of Barcelona, we went to Genoa where we arrive after 1:00 PM. The shore excursion people did arrange for a city tour, so at least people had an option of a tour.
