A poll on smoking

Cruise Elf - thank you for the input and I had no idea the Lido Deck smoking area on Liberty was removed mid-cruise and may not have read that. Sorry.

 

I was just going on my recent cruise on the Sensation where the Lido Deck was smoking as was the Piano Bar by the casino. I guess these changes are being phased in.

 

Also, thank you for your candor and you also stated the main overall theme which is the fact you have a choice whether to cruise Carnival and should the bottom line suffer due to enough cruisers bidding Bon Voyage to Carnival because of lack of smoking areas then more changes would take place.

 

So refreshing to be able to share opinions with other cruisers.

Also please note that a smoker will go to a non smoking restaurant and leave within a couple of hours. If a smoker is on a cruise ship, where are they going to go?

 

I agree that changes are coming, and while I have no idea whether it will hurt or help Carnival's bottom line, I can say that I will vote with my feet. And my money.

Snapaxp - I truly apologize if I came across as snippy. I smoke less than a half a pack a day. I can get it down to 6 a day, and I don't smoke in my own house. I know that there are rude smokers and rude non smokers and every thread on smoking has brought out the worst on both sides. I stated in an earlier post that I'm good with smoking outside. Most smokers accept that restriction.

I think we're most frustrated with feeling like it the rude non smokers who are the only ones getting heard.

 

Your opinions are more than welcome here. It's those that show up just to call names that frustrate me.

Cruise Elf - yeah, message boards are weird and no need to apologize at all. I was not in the remotest bit taken aback or offended or anything by your post. I thought it was refreshing and informative. There are rude people on both sides of the aisle. Have you thought about the e-cigarette things? I don't know much about them, but some people on the radio were ranting and raving about how smokers still get the nicotine, but not the added chemicals that you get in cigarettes and it there's no real "2nd hand smoke". wishing you fun cruising.

There are still smoking areas inside on the ships and you can still smoke outside....... few people are overeacting IMHO.

Smoking in open areas do not bother me.. unless I am eating next to it. Being a non smoker I can smell it a mile away. but Ill let you know for sure on my review..lol

when carnival restricted smoking in the cigar bar, this told me that they lost their collective minds.

 

and i agree with kathy+numbers about how strange it is to make the aft non smoking where the children aren't, and where it will usually blow "south", as opposed to allowing it at the main pool areas where there are kids.

 

this is what happens when you string along policy piecemeal, winging it as you go along.

 

i am very glad i don't smoke, and my feet still work to take me to or from anywhere i wish to go, or not from anything that offends me.

There are smoking restrictions in land based vacations too. Restaurants, bars, public buildings/stores, even some hotels are 100% non-smoking. With fewer and fewer smokers there are going to be fewer and fewer places for them to smoke, except in their own homes.

 

I used to smoke and my job takes me into homes of people that do smoke so it doesn't bother me. However my wife who has never smoked gets severe headaches when around it for a good period of time. I don't judge people that smoke anymore than i do people that don't. My personal feeling and the same i held onto when i smoked is that i would first ask anyone in my area if the minded and if they did i would move to another area so as not to bother someone. I always thought about if the roles were reversed how i would appreciate if someone was courteous to me. I guess i went by the mentality that just cause i have the Right to do something didn't always make it the right thing to do.

 

You sound like a very courteous smoker. It's the ones at the opposite end of the spectrum that ruin it for the rest of the smokers. My DD is a smoker herself, but is courteous as you are. Before Michigan restaurants went 100% non-smoking I would tell her we could sit in the smoking section so she could smoke but she wouldn't hear of it. She smoked before we went in, and when we came out. She (and her husband) don't even smoke in their own home. They go outside on the porch, even in the dead of Michigan's brutal winters. They have children and don't want to smoke around them. If all smokers were courteous (and if all non-smokers were as well!) we could all get along just fine. :)

That would be the first thing I would check if I ever see a survey, the demographics of those that were polled to begin with.

Carnival is a business and they run their business the way then want. Survey or no, if they want to make areas non smoking and revenue isn't affected, then it's their choice. It's not just about making a place to smoke, they have to have staff to clean it, empty ash trays, etc and if enough staff complain about being exposed to smoke, it's an issue. It was really hard to be a server in restaurants before the smoking bans became common because so few were smoke free, you really were out of luck trying to find work where you could avoid smoke because there weren't many options. The bars and restaurants adjusted, there was no mass loss of small businesses as some predicted.

 

I feel for the smokers and agree it would be best if they had a convienent place, but once you designate a place as smoking, the smoke permeates EVERYTHING around and it's hard to get the smell out.

 

I understand the smoking ban happened mid cruise because they didn't realize the smoking would be so close to the food and mean people would have to walk through it, sit in it, etc to access the new food venues. I think CCL is trying and wish people could make constructive comments without bashing. Making one side of LIDO smoking doesn't help if there are food venues on both sides. It's hard to get through those areas without it getting into your clothes/hair, etc. Last cruise I had to dry clean my wrap and several dresses that I had wanted to wear again because I got caught up in smoking areas, even in a short time, it gets into everything!

 

Hopefully CCL can find a place that isn't in a traffic area or near food. I personally don't go to bars/casinos that allow smoking because the smell makes me nausious and I have to go wash my hair again to get it out. With long hair, that is a pain in the neck to wash and dry!

 

Just trying to be nice and find a sensible solution.

absolutely, but when you are trying to make policy changes based on reaction from individuals, therefore trying to appease each and every one of your customers individually, you will fail, cause there is NO business that can please everyone!

 

they jumped headfirst into the fire on the liberty due to 44 complaints.

The smoking section is basically the middle part of one side of the deck. Why can't Carnival just do that? Maybe it depends on the particular ship & design as to whether or not that would work, I don't know. Just a thought.....

Carnival does the same as Princess......except on the new remodel on the Liberty. And as of right now it is in review.

Also I believe the design on some ships like the Splendor they have the smoking on deck 10 instead of the Lido too. So yes it's all about the design.

I just got off the Miracle Nov 10th and took these photos that show the use of some of the smoking and non-smoking areas.

 

The casino bar at 6:19PM, guess which side is non-smoking.

 

Sports bar at 6:36PM. This is a non-smoking bar that only had people in it on the weekend and Monday night during the football games, the rest of the time it was empty.

 

Frankenstein's lounge at 2:51PM. This is a smoking bar with no ashtrays until it opens at night.

 

Carnival (IMO) is losing alot of revenue in these non-smoking areas. Also the aft, adult only pool area was mostly empty on the non-smoking side. Just my observations.
