Tahiti and Islands - water shoes or dive boots?

Does anyone know if water shoes are sufficient for snorkelling in the islands? It seems there are a lot of posts about sharp coral. I have dive boots, but they take up more room than flimsy water shoes.

Water shoes are fine. You certainly will need to use them as it is not fine sand beaches, mostly coral beaches. Enjoy, the snorkelling is great over there, plenty of varieties of fish.

would a teva type sandal work ok as water shoes?

Sea urchins are a worry in places.Saw lots of these near Huahine in the shallow channels. We used thick soles water shoes.

I used Tevas when I was snorkeling without fins and dive booties when I used fins. My fins are open heeled hence the need for the booties.
