cb at sea Posted December 20, 2011 #2 Share Posted December 20, 2011 Many things require NO excursion company at all! A guidebook or online research can save you a bundle!
peacebeach Posted December 20, 2011 #3 Share Posted December 20, 2011 I've never used ShoreTrips, but found this on the boards: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?p=31663643 :)

Colorado Kat Posted December 20, 2011 #5 Share Posted December 20, 2011 Go to the Port of Call area on these boards, and read up on your ports. You'll find lots of good suggestions. If you log in first, you can use the search function.
serene56 Posted December 20, 2011 #6 Share Posted December 20, 2011 I agree with the above. Check the port of calls boards - you can find a vendor for cheaper. I found shore trips to be more costly then others.
Beopthtuh Posted December 20, 2011 #7 Share Posted December 20, 2011 go onto the shore excursions board or the cruise line roll call and have a look around there, sometimes folks doing the same cruise as you are looking to do excursions and maybe you can join them

Yes the group I cruise with used to use them for shore excursions and they do a pretty good job. Gives you a variety but keep in mind some of these shore trips can be booked directly through the tour provides so research each country or port and see what you can find. Also use Frommers and Trip Advisor for guidance.
jerry2457 Posted December 21, 2011 #9 Share Posted December 21, 2011 Yes do research on your ports and do some on line homework. You may find you can do the same shore trip or excursion for much less by booking directly through the tour provider. There are always options to consider and ways to do shore trips for less $ so do your homework.
bbwex Posted December 21, 2011 #10 Share Posted December 21, 2011 We used Shore Trips exclusively all over the Baltic, and for several excursions in Alaska. They are excellent. We had one tour (Berlin) that we thought was not up to snuff, and they refunded half the cost even though the excursion was not terrible -- just not as good as others. On another occasion, we were given a full refund because the actual tour operator (Shore Trips generally contracts with people they check out in each port) did not warn us that our flight was weather contingent, and when we did not get all the way to our original destination, but still had an all-day tour and flight, we were refunded 100% of the cost. We found that they are careful in selecting local operators, continually check them out, and are very easy to work with. Our TA uses them all the time as well. TravlGrl Posted December 28, 2011 #12 Share Posted December 28, 2011 We've used them twice for excursions I couldn't find anywhere else. We've passed them up many times though because they tend to be more expensive than booking direct with the tour company. If you can't find a local tour company that offers what you're looking for, I wouldn't hesitate to book with Shoretrips. They're reputable and good.
