Snorkeling in the cenote

I picked up a Fodor's guide on the Yucatan, and the short section on Dzibilchaltun said some great fish swim in the cenote there and to take mask and fins. We are taking those on our cruise, but 1) in June, will it be miserably hot to lug those things around (we'll be on our own excursion) and 2) has anyone actually snorkeled in the cenote?
