comps in casino

I know this post is a little older but I found it helpful and had another question so thought I would just add it on.....

DH likes to play the tables and has been known to sit at one (usually 3 card) for 6+ hours a night. Sometimes winning big, sometimes losing big and sometimes breaking even but still carries him far. I know we will sign up for a CAS card as I'm sure from the amount of money and time he spends we should end up with something. Now there is me, I will gamble a little, slot here or there, roulette. Maybe dropping $300-$400 for the week and I usually don't stay at a machine or table long, just play for a bit and move on win or lose, so not too much. I assume I will not get much of anything. Can I use DH's CAS card too or do I need to get my own? Will they link our points?? Not looking to get over or anything so please don't flame me just asking how it works as I'm sure my points won't add up to be eligible for anything but obviously adding a couple hundred extra to his couple thousand, it may help, no??

Yes they will combine your numbers with your husband's, we do it all of the time, I am the gambler, my DH dabbles.

So yes, they comp. You either have to win a lot, or lose a lot. Key is to stay at the table for a while.

Yep, being there and becoming known to the pit boss is key. Also, tipping well when you win also helps, I think.

I don't bet large unless I'm on a roll, but I do play for long periods. I've never even gotten enough points to get a free drink card, but I have had the pit bosses comp me with free drinks - by the last 2 nights of the last 2 cruises they were comping almost all of my drinks. We've received free wine and chocolate covered strawberries delivered to our cabin by the casino staff. On one cruise I did get a $25 OBC at the end of the cruise, but on that cruise I had played more Video Poker, which along with slots racks up the points faster than table play does.

Sorry as stated a couple times on here, I don't play tables only slots. So I can't help with the formula for tables, which I believe is a different formula from slots. Either way you have to have, I believe, 2500 points on your card to get a free drink card.

I know the formula for slots on the ship is about the same as land casinos to earn points.

sjbdtz in #14 posts about tables.

I don't know if you made a mistake or if someone told you incorrectly but to get a free drink card it is 1500 points. I found out on our latest cruise unfortunately only 2 days before we got off.

What happened was I went to the casino host services and told them I have had a card on previous cruises but never cashed in on any benefits for one reason or another. Mostly because I just don't pay attention and forget to go to the desk on the last night. Anyway she looked up my points and I had about 2200 points to start off with. So I was determined to remember this time.

Normally most of the time I spend in the casino I am playing BJ or roulette which I actually do pretty well at by staying even or winning a bit. But then at the end of the night I think that I should try and win a bigger pot on the slots. Unfortunately it never seems to work for me and I end up going down mostly. I always think... okay next time I will leave. :o About 2 days before the end of the cruise I had put my card in a slot and didn't notice that it didn't register and an employee walked by and told me to retry it. I did and it showed me my points and he asked me why I didn't have a drink card as I should have gotten one at 1500 points. I told him I didn't know that I was eligible for one. He asked for my card and took it and when he came back there was a little drink card attached by a chain to my players card. He asked if I wanted a drink and I said yes and he went and had a waiter bring one to me. I wish I had known he wasn't a waiter and wouldn't be back as I would have given him a tip for his efforts. Later I looked around for him but couldn't see him. Well, I didn't get much use out of the drink card as I had that one drink and had a migraine the next night so didn't go. But I did get a couple more on the last night.

I did go to redeem my points on the last night and I had 3600 pts (combined with DH's (he doesn't play as much as I do)) and I got $36 OBC put on our account. Not huge but I would have played that much anyway so getting something back was nice. So I have a question... since I redeemed them do I start over on the next cruise or will I be eligible for a drink card right off the bat? This is assuming (knowing) that I will be on the ship within less than the 18 months (can't imagine waiting that long to be on another cruise).

Actually neither. If you read my post, I said "I believed it was...". Not that it was. I have since been corrected on other posts since this and yes from what others have said it is 1500 points.

It is not something I've ever had to worry about since my cabin and drinks are comped through CAS. And if they weren't I would rack up the 1500 or 2500 in the first day of my cruise.

Simple answer to break up the confusion of others. 1500 gets the free drink card if not booked by CAS. 2500 points the minimum needed to cash in points for OBC.

The biggest misconception people have about comps in any casino is that it is tied to your wins or losses...it has everything to do with your average bet and the time you are at the table. That is it. There is a formula used to determine your "points". I usually bet 50 - 200 a hand on blackjack, 200 or so a roll at craps. On my last cruise I had 1,000 taken off my bill and I have gotten 2 free cruises (one in April to the caribbean one in June to the med).

So just to clarify, the 1500 will get you a drink card but your not actually using the points to "pay" for the card, meaning after you get the card, your points don't go down to zero?? Also, so say you get enough points to get OBC and you use them while on the current cruise does this prevent you from being eligible for future comp'd cruises or future discounts on cruises? Meaning do your points buy you those discounts/comps or are they discounting or comping you just knowing you'll go on your next cruise and play again? Also, I don't know if it was this thread or another but someone mentioned for comp'd cruise or discounts they also look at your other spending habits?? Is this true? Will they take into account the fact that DH likes daily massages and that we will do specialty restaraunts and buy drinks etc???

The drink card doesn't use up your points, it's when they are redeemed for credit against your bill at the end of the cruise, that is what takes the points back to zero.

I specifically asked for them not to redeem my points from my last Gem cruise, so I hope they are still there and I should get a card right away. I normally book through CAS, but couldn't for this none as I had too many cruises booked, they would only allow me two at a time.

AFAIK, getting the drink card at 1500 points will not reduce your points balance, but I am not 100% sure, as our card is always in our cabin upon embarkation.. Hopefully someone else can confirm this.

Cashing in your points will have nothing to do with future discounts and comps. They don't look at how many points you have left, they look at your average play (how many points you earned on each sailing) to determine these comps.

They will look at your spending when cashing out your points at the end of the cruise. 2500 points will get you $25 towards bar bills, specialties, spa services, etc. 5000 points will get you $25 off jewelry, art, and gift purchases, etc. So if you don't have enough bar bills, etc, charged to your account, they will start applying your credit at the 50% rate for the secondary charges (art, jewelry, etc). Also, if you are a highly enough rated player, a host will approach you to comp you dinner or a spa treatment, etc.

Thank you all for the info. Fishbait, especially to you. I did a CAS search and have gotten a lot of useful info from your replies on other posts.

DH always complains about the time I spend on the computer researching, until of course I gave him all this lovely info. Now he keeps coming up w. more questions "ask your friends this" lol.

Thanks again!!!

I can confirm the 1500 point drink card does not get deducted. In fact I have been rolling points from ship to ship and getting my card day one. I would rather roll the 3500 points I have know then cash them for almost nothing and have to earn back 1500 points at the tables. Points roll up quickly on the slots but take forever at the tables. Points are good for up to 18 months and refresh every time you move them to another ship.

Ooops... yes you did say that.:)

I think that it took me 3 cruises rolling over to get the 2200. :p

Okay it's late and now I'm totally confused. I didn't know that when I went there on the last night and they looked up my play and saw that I had 3600 so they gave me $36 credit on my account that I would be back at 0 the next cruise? I really hope this isn't true as they didn't tell me this and I would never have done it. That means after all this time getting my points up that high I got $36 and a couple drinks? I would have kept it for the next cruise for the drink card.

You are in fact back to 0 points. You can't roll points you cashed in. Think they are going to give you that massive $36 over and over. :-)

This is true. But you now also have a basis for booking cruises through CAS, which can get you a discount or maybe even a comp, plus a drink card waiting in your cabin when you sail.

I've been using my Harrah's Diamond discount the last few years and always received the drink card with it. However, in 2010 the discount wasn't available for the date we wanted (we booked late). I had CAS points that I hadn't cashed in the year before but was told I couldn't apply them to the 1500 needed for the drink card. You had to earn 1500 points on each cruise to qualify. This was on the Jewel in 2010.

I have used points rolled from prior cruises for a drink card on my last 3 cruises. Just waited for the points to show up on my new card and go to the services desk and request the card.

thank you for sharing the info about drink cards...I have not yet reached 1500 points, but I will eventually as I roll over points from cruise to cruise. I had wrongly assumed one cashed in the 1500 points for a drink card for one cruise...so I am delighted to now learn that points will continue to roll over (eventually with a drink card) from one cruise to the next.

I believe points are only good for 18 months. Longer then that between cruises and they are gone.

Oh, I cruise often enough to roll the points, but thanks for giving me another excuse to cruise regularly.

I'm glad it worked for you but it didn't work for me. I had been on the Jewel the year before and, after I cashed in points for credit the last night, I had about 250 points left. I started the cruise with those points and when I had 1500 points and went to the host to get a drink card they wouldn't give it to me until I reached 1500 for that cruise.

Probably like any other casino. The slot host has a certain amount of leeway when it comes to comps and priveleges (like the drink card)

Actually now that I'm more awake it does make sense but but wish I had known as I probably wouldn't have cashed it in. I'm not a big time gambler so was really looking forward to a free drinks on the house.

How much of a discount would they give me for my lowly 3600 pts?;) Can I use it with other promotions like the 9 month or more OBC? What about the AMEX, lattitudes?

I think I recall that POA doesn't have a casino? Would they still give me a discount?

I guess if they have a good enough deal I could book through them and get my drink card that way. Not a big drinker either but would be nice to have one or two a night.:)

If you book with CAS it cannot be combined with any other discounts and you get the free drink card.... Pride of America doesn;t have a casino therefore there would be no benefit to booking thru CAS...and they won;t take the booking.....In order to reap what you sow - you must gamble....3600 points is a reasonable amount, but they decide the discount and or type of room they will comp when you call, they look up your play from the last time and tell you what they will offer....there's no real formula.....
