S.T.Y.L.E. Cards Benefit Crew Members

Could you hear what they were saying? I just ask because I have had crew members spell their name for me as I am filling out a card for them. I keep some in the little purse I carry on the ship. From afar it could be mistaken for them telling me what to say instead of just how to spell their name so the correct person is rewarded.

Sometimes there are several people with the same first name from the same country, so do get the full name. If it's your cabin steward they could figure out who he/she is by the number, or on fixed dining seating, that could be figured by table, but on NC where there is freestyle, if you don't catch the last name, give as much info as possible, like 6 p.m. in venetian restaurant on Monday.

I thought someone told me that they are discontinuing the STYLE cards because of abuse by some. I actually saw a crew member telling a passenger what to write on the card and then that crew member turned the card in.

Even if this happens all the time, I find it hard to believe that any passenger would spend even two seconds on the card if they didn't actually think that crew member was deserving. More likely, the passenger was asking what verbage would be best to get the crew member the most benefit.

We like choosing which crew members made our cruise special and we fill them out and turn them in all at once usually the last afternoon. I like to put some specific details not just a bunch of flowery adjectives.

I just love the post where kids filled out the cards. Bravo!

Style cards are nice for the crew member to read but sadly, most of the time they don't do anything for the crew. I've had some Hotel Directors that go out of their way to read them, give the crew a nice thanks but I've also had Hotel Director that has someone else stamp his name and couldn't care at all.

If this is true across the fleet, it is sad. However, if I can give someone who's made a good impression on me some positive feedback, I'll coontinue to turn in a STYLE card. Crewmembers we've taken time to talk to seem to appreciate them. If there are Hotel Directors who don't recognize the value in motivating staff this way, they're missing an opportunity.

A tip is not the only way to show your appreciation to those crew members who go above and beyond for you. STYLE cards are a FREE way to show your appreciation to a crew member that will help him/her in a real way. A crew member told me about these cards. From what I understand, when a guest fills out a STYLE card for a crew member it goes in their record. The cards can earn them prizes, they get recognition in front of the rest of the crew, and it can even play a part in their job promotion. Later, at a captain's question session I asked a question about the cards, the crew member who handled the microphone gave me a big smile because it really makes a difference in the life of the crew member.

You usually can find one or two cards in your cabin, or you can ask for STYLE cards at the front desk.

I'm glad to see this thread. We had taken 3 NCL cruises before we heard of STYLE cards. On our last NCL cruise one of the casino dealers that had been outstandingly friendly and helpful mentioned the STYLE cards to us when we asked him how to tip him or repay him for his help. He said the STYLE card is better than money because of the ways in which it helps towards bonuses and promotions.

With that in mind, we made sure we got names of helpful crew members and towards the end of the cruise we asked the front desk for about ten STYLE cards and filled them out for each crew member who'd gone out of their way to help us in some way or had been extra friendly.

When we mentioned to our cabin stewards that in addition to the extra tip we'd filled out STYLE cards for each of them, their facec lit up and they thanked us profusely. They had given us outstanding service during b2b2b cruises, including extra help.

This is the reaction I have had when I have asked for a name for a STYLE card or asked for them from the front desk. Maybe it does vary from ship to ship.

We got off the Sun last weekend. Nelson, our cabin attendant, left a few in our room one evening. We filled out one for him, one for the server who made our anniversary so special. It just took a minute and hopefully they don't fall on deaf eyes (as it were.)

I also got an e-mail a few days after returning home asking me to fill out a very extensive guest satisfaction survey. It had lots of room for my thoughts, opinions and experiences. I wonder if everyone gets one or if it's random.

I didn't know what the STYLE cards were, but noticed some employees had STYLE pins and some did not on our first cruise. Asked at the front desk, they explained - and I started filling out cards.

On our most recent cruise on the Star, I filled out a bunch. Every time I asked how to spell their last name, or asked to see a name tag - got a wary look, until I explained it was for STYLE. Then - GIANT beaming smile, and got full name + spelling.

We met a couple on this cruise that we really got along with, and ended up spending a good bit of time with. She spent 20+ years in the industry (to include a couple stints as cruise director), and she said it was the most important thing that you could do for the crew. They're supposed to go not only through their manager up to the Captain - but also all the way to corporate. They also use them to determine how to split the collective tips...

Def keep filling out the cards. I loved getting them and reading all the comments. I have every single one of them saved. I just don't want people to think they are more important to the crew than tips or leads to promotions or pay raises.

James, thank you for giving us the lowdown on the cards. I'd never substitute a STYLE card for a tip, but its a less commonly known way to show my appreciation to the crew members who make my vacation wonderful.

I find it hard to believe that NCL would stop the STYLE cards. Everytime we turn them in, we hear the same story "Thanks, no one ever turns them in." So I find it hard to believe there would be such broad abuse of the cards. In fact, you must turn them in personally to the front desk or concierge and sign your name and room number. So I dont think there would be that much abuse especially to discontinue the system

Maybe you've hit the nail on the head. Perhaps it has nothing to do with the rumored stopping them because of abuse. But stopping them because it is old technology and maybe they get better feedback from their online surveys.

Or maybe it is just a rumor and they have no intention of stopping them at all.

I think it's random. We did not get an email survey after our b2b2b cruises.
